“In the morning, I often grab my breakfast and coffee and start my day sitting at the high table on our back deck before work. At the end of the school day, our son plays soccer on the sport pad. When my wife or I are busy with a zoom call, the other one can escape to our office shed to find space to focus. At the end of the workday, I’m likely to find my her resting in the hammock next to the Japanese maple she always wanted. When I return from a cold day of cross-country skiing, I’ll take 30 minutes in our barrel sauna to warm up and relax. And right now, I’m sitting in the patio space we use to entertain friends and family. Oh, and thanks to an effective French drain, I no longer worry about my back yard flooding every spring, simply because we’re at the lower end of our street. That’s the award winning back yard oasis (see ‘Backyard Retreat’ article - https://mydigitalpublication.com/publication/?i=758453) that Ryan at Green Roots Landscaping designed for us, and Quinn and his team brought to life during COVID...and I really can’t think of a significant thing we’d change if we were to do it all over again. Our previous back yard had an ageing deck, and a patch of grass that wouldn’t grow, plus some significant water accumulation after heavy rains, as the sump pump drained into the yard. It wasn't used much and honestly felt like wasted space. Ryan took all of our requests and fit them into a design that works, and still feels spacious in a typical 50x100 ft lot in an older Ottawa neighbourhood. We asked for a few modifications before starting but not many. Even though Green Roots had been recommended to us from friends, we were anxious when the project started but that quickly dissipated. When is the last time you took photos of the tools your landscaper used, because at the end of the day the shovels were lined up like soldiers and the wheelbarrows and other equipment looked like they’d been laid out on a grid? Quinn’s team were friendly, on time, and incredibly detail-oriented as they went about their work - so much so that I actually introduced Ryan to a friend who owns a paving company to discuss his hiring and employee training practices. And the contractors they brought in for carpentry, electrical, etc. were equally a pleasure to interact with. I obviously can’t say the Green Roots is the best landscaping company in Ottawa – let’s face it, we’re only redoing our backyard once – but I would highly recommend talking to Ryan and team, because if you like their proposed design, you can rest assured in the end you’ll get what you wanted, and the journey to get there will be better than you expected.”
