Our experience with Great American Landscapes, in the care of John Kattwinkel, has been exceptional. We are city to suburb transplants and our gardening IQ was subpar (non-existent). John listened to what we wanted, educated us on what would work and where. He and Michael Swisher even offered to lend a hand if I find myself inspired to contribute to my garden. The thing that sets GAL and John Kattwinkel apart is their seamless coordination of various experts such as lighting, watering systems, masonry and maintenance. Above all, John is really on top of communication, responding to our emails and text messages within hours or less. We highly recommend John and all the other experts at Great American Landscapes.

We recently had a flagstone patio, herringbone paver fire pit area, lighting, and landscaping installed by Steven Talcott and the Great American team and could not be happier with the finished product. As someone in the landscape industry myself, I have high expectations when it comes to craftsmanship and attention to detail, and these guys absolutely delivered. The workmanship, especially on the flagstone and herringbone pavers, was outstanding, and the plant installation tied everything together perfectly. Communication throughout the entire project was excellent. Steven was involved every step of the way, made great recommendations to improve the design, and genuinely cared about the final product. I've been working with GAL for about 4 yrs., from the design phase to weekly maintenance. Of the 12 companies I've worked for in the past 20 yrs., they are by far the best. They show up as promised (and on time!), and accommodate our needs.Calvin in particular is a gem, but each member of the crew works very hard. Nor do they waste valuable time on their cellphones. For all these reasons, it's worth it to me to pay more. I trust them and treasure them!

Great attention to detail, communicative and timely! Great American Landscapes built a patio to cover over the backyard in my rowhome. They were incredibly helpful in nailing down the best way to work around existing fencing, drainage concerns, etc. They were also conscientious towards my budget, sharing various options so I could make an informed choices around costs. They also came in exactly on schedule!

We used Great American Landscapes to build a very expensive patio in our backyard. The team did not center the sitting wall when building and when they realized their mistake, tried to charge us extra to make it longer so that it was centered. They also installed drains that are uneven and do not drain properly, leaving standing water after every rainfall. When contacted to remedy the situation, since it was beyond a year after they did the work (we tried our best to manage the situation with cleaning after rainfalls, etc), they wanted to charge us even more money to fix their mistake. Do not recommend.

Great American Landscape is truly the greatest collaboration company for everything outdoors! We started small with the outstanding container component side of the company (Julie and her team are top notch), we then asked Craig to help design an entire side yard project with a stone patio, turf, trees, flowers, two-way fireplace, etc. We are so thrilled with how it came out and loved working with him too! Julie came back and helped us pick out beautiful outdoor furniture and accessories. And most recently we added the GAL maintenance crew to help with the entire yard and have been very impressed with Calvin and his team. Highly recommend working with Great American Landscape!!

The staff and crew are terrific. Landscape designer (Steve Talcott) transformed a large lot into a thing of beauty. He was responsive & really listened to my concerns. I then signed up for monthly maintenance and that crew is great too. Zach, Osmond and Selvin are quite knowledgeable about horticulture, and they frequently went beyond the call of duty to help me. I've had lots of previous landscapers, and GAL is the best by far. While not the cheapest company, their expertise, professionalism, and care for my property is worth it. They have my highest recommendation.

I was apprehensive about contacting Great American Landscapes as I thought they would be out of my price range for new landscaping for the front of the house and to plant trees for cover along my back fence. While they came in slightly higher than another quote I received, I am so happy I decided to go with them. The finished product blew away both my and my husbands expectations. We pretty much said, make it look better, do what you think would look good, and I can't get over how well they did just that! Not only did they remove our old half dead shrubbery and plant new trees and bushes, they leveled out our flower beds, sodded areas that weren't level, mulched areas I didn't even realize we needed them to and cleaned up like they were never there. It is not easy to beat my expectations, my bar is usually set higher than most. I cannot get over how far above my bar Great American Landscapes landed. Working with a Condo Board is not the easiest - you have to be patient and be able to deal with different personalities, all who have an opinion as to how things should be done. We had the absolute pleasure to work with Steve Talcott from Great American Landscapes when it came to beautifying the area around our home. Steve met with my wife and I and listened to our 'needs and wants' and was able to offer a customized solution for the front, sides, and back of our home. Specifically, we wanted to utilize the existing plants, but transplant them from the front to the back and install a custom field stone patio and stone veneer at the front of our home. We also wanted to expand our beds and bring in Maryland native plants both in front and behind our home, and we needed a solution to the down spouts and massive amount of rainwater we got from our large roof when it rains. Steve's team from Great American Landscapes was able to not only re-use and transplant our existing bushes in a manner that made the back yard pop, they also moved all our rose bushes to the side of our deck where it now serves as a beautiful visual break and hides the underside of the back deck. They planted a mature crape myrtle which tied the back yard together as it was a natural anchor for the corner of our deck; they also installed a dogwood tree near our lot line which abuts a state park, and the tree blends seamlessly with the surrounding old-growth and we can't wait to see it in bloom next year. Finally, his team were able to bury down spout pop up drains so that the massive amount of rainwater has a far easier way to get downhill and away from the home. Taken together, Steve and the team at Great American Landscapes provided us with a custom landscaping solution, performed the significant amount of work in around a week, and we were able to have frank and open conversations in order to get what we wanted at the budget figure we had in mind. We simply can't recommend them enough.

I am so happy with my planters from Exteriors Outdoor Styling, I started with just two in the front of my house and after the first planting season I added two window boxes in front, a large round planter and 7 rectangular planters in the back. The flowers that Julie chooses are always spot on. My two teenagers (who never like anything we do in the house-lol) couldn't praise the flowers enough, especially the ones in the backyard that truly transformed the feel of the patio. We painted a wall in our back yard and the colors of the flowers were a perfect compliment, with a surprise hot pink flower coming up after the others bloomed and then blooming all summer. It is just about time to switch out for fall plants and I cannot wait to see what Julie does. We give her a lot of leeway to decide what to plant, after filling out a form about likes and dislikes. She has yet to disappoint. I would totally recommend her and this company.

I was referred to Exterior Outdoor Styling by a neighbor, who's plantings I admired. Julie was very responsive when I called and came over to look at my space and make recommendations. She was very creative and immediately came up with wonderful ideas. While expensive, the end result is beyond my imagination. The pots she used and the plantings are fabulous. It is done in such a way that I could never have "recreated" the look by going to a local nursery. Everyone who has seen them, including my husband who never notices anything has raved about how beautiful it all is. The team that came to do the installation was professional and careful. I hardly knew they were there. I am very happy with the end result and will definitely be a long term customer. I would recommend Julie to everyone!

Scott Saylor and his team are top-notch. I brought a design to them for bid. Scott worked with me to scope the project to meet my budget and needs, adapting as plans changed. They weren't the cheapest and they weren't the most expensive. It was a 6-figure project that included re-grading part of the lawn, replacing the parking pad, putting in a new patio, installing new sod, and planting new trees/bushes/plants. I liked that the crew was on-site from day one until the project was finished (no jumping between projects day-to-day). The crew was on-time, professional, and collaborative. I'm delighted with how my project turned out and confident Great American Landscapes was the right choice. Zero hesitation in recommending them.

We recently asked Great American Landscapes to build an outdoor fireplace to enhance our patio area. We thoroughly enjoyed working with them, from design to logistics to construction. Great American Landscapes was the answer to 8 years of flooding in our home. After working with another company for many (disastrous) years to try and fix our flooding issues, a friend told me about Great American. They came and regraded our yard, added a French drain, and replaced our deck with the loveliest paver patio. In 4 DAYS! They were fast and did beautiful work and we haven't had flooding since then. Now we have a beautiful backyard and SO much less stress! Thank you, thank you, Great American!

Casey and his team did an outstanding job of completely revamping our front and back yards, after a renovation designed to update a traditional DC brick colonial to a modern Scandi/Zen oasis. Converting a shady backyard to 3 different gathering spots has been ideal, esp. during the pandemic. Their work was timely, professional, exacting, and beautiful. They were also very responsive to our questions and suggestions, but they also provided expert guidance and sound reality checks. Casey and our landscape designer worked perfectly together. Julie Friedman of Exteriors Landscape Design is a uniquely talented plantswoman whose work I recommend without reservation. She has exquisite taste in color and selects healthy cultivars that marry well. Julie creates fantastic-looking and wonderfully-performing exterior container plantings. Containers that use a variety of plants, with a mix of leaf and flower color, texture, and size, are interesting for months on end, and Julie is a master with her choices. I am a seasoned garden designer myself, and used to plant up my own containers. My husband and I thought they were pretty nice. But after we saw the containers that Julie designed for us, and watched them last and bloom beautifully throughout the entire summer, we never went back to planting our own. She is a real expert and now designs containers for many of my clients, who are delighted with her creations.

Julie was and still is a delight to work with. She knows what plants work in this area as well as which areas in the garden the plants would thrive in. I needed sections of my garden redesigned and she came up with a design I loved and it fell within my budget. Two years later my garden still delights me. Julie also changes the plants in my pots seasonally which I love.

Exterior Landscapes Design is a small company that does great work! I hired them to design, install and maintain more than 30 exterior concrete planting containers at Bowie Marketplace Shopping Center for Berman Enterprises. They handle 4 seasonal rotations annually at this location and provide design options, perform the installation themselves and clearly communicate their installation schedule with our Staff. I have renewed their Contract for another year due to their excellent work and the positive feedback we receive from our Tenants. It is very evident they take pride in their work. You will not be disappointed if you hire this Company.
