If you want an "open hearth" like shown above, the most logical thing to do is to build a woodburning fireplace and add gas logs. There is a little bit of a trick to supporting the weight from above without a corner post, but there are ways to do it. The "planks" which you are seeing is the imprint left from the dimensional lumber used to build the form, and the variation of color comes from the tannins transferred from the lumber into the concrete also....

I really really like the looks of this fireplace, very different and the large pieces are very appealing and make a wonderful focal point or even moreso.
Now if you dont mind me asking, any thoughts on what the finish on the steel is exactly?... picture, I saw that someone had asked what the surround was and the answer was "steel." So I'm assuming that it's just large, thin squares of steel that have been installed, like tiles would be. That's a fabulous fireplace....
