The 2021 Southern Living Idea House is inspiring on multiple levels—from the stunning location in Louisville, Kentucky overlooking the Ohio river, to the design-driven home that marries European countryside vibes with a timeless aesthetic. Dubbed the “forever home,” the concept was to design for all stages of life, with thoughtful spaces that meet the ever-evolving needs of families today. The 5,545-square-foot, Colonial Greek Revival Cottage-style home is located in The Breakers at Prospect community and is the collective effort of many. While it may have formerly been a trend to embrace open layout living spaces, following the pandemic families are seeking spaces in the home that feel separated, to allow for privacy. Rooms with clear intentions allow more options for areas in which to spend time, depending on your mood, and this home perfectly balances livable and lively ideas. Marvin products were chosen for this project to maximize the use of natural light, allow airflow from outdoors to indoors, and provide expansive views that overlook the Ohio River. These Brown Fantasy Leathered quartzite countertops are the star of this kitchen. With sweeping hues of brown, tan, gray, and white, the movement in this natural stone carries your eye throughout the space. The homeowners' installed a complimentary glass tile backsplash which looks fabulous against their white cabinetry. A framed insert of glass and stone mosaic tile above the stove makes a great focal point. They also have a Shaw farmhouse sink which looks out to a gorgeous view of their backyard.

The centerpiece of the scene is a rectangular dining table crafted from light brown wood. It boasts a smooth finish and a clean design, featuring four straight legs connected by a stretcher base - a horizontal bar that runs between the legs on each long side for added stability. The light brown color of the table creates a warm and inviting feel in the room. In the center of the table sits a simple yet elegant centerpiece. A white ceramic vase holds several green plant stems, adding a touch of nature and life to the space. Surrounding the table are four chairs, each with a brown wooden frame that complements the table. The chairs are upholstered in a light brown fabric, creating a cohesive look with the table. The upholstery appears light-colored enough to add contrast and prevent the room from looking too dark or monotonous. A decorative mirror hangs on the wall directly behind the table. The mirror's frame has a light brown finish that echoes the color of the table and chair frames, tying the design elements together. This master bedroom was very large with 3 full-length windows and a set of French doors with a transom window above. Because of its size, a dark brown paint color was used to make the room feel cozy and inviting. Custom bedding was created in a blue, cream, and mushroom palette. Mushroom patterned drapes were hung over the pre-existing cream wood blinds. Silver sunburst mirrors were placed above each wooden nightstand and the nightstands were decorated with blue glass lamps and silver accessories. Abstract art in shades of blue and turquoise was used around the room. A seating area was created in front of the fireplace for reading and watching TV. A brown leather club chair was placed atop a traditional cream and blue rug. A blue and cream upholstered bench at the foot of the bed completed the room. Photo Credit: Oivanki Photography
