Love the idea of a white kitchen.....I have one myself. You also mentioned gray laminates...a good choice for the living room because I see gray in the fireplace front. The cabinetry in the kitchen and the countertop could work with some grays as long as the undertones compliment those colors. Kinda hard to see the undertones in the countertop but on the pic it looks like it might have some greens (?) Do these rooms open to each other? If so I'd use a pale gray instead of white for the walls. That way the color will look like you've chosen it from colors in the fireplace...a rather big piece in the room. There are so many beautiful grays: choose one that has undertones displayed in the countertop and the fireplace and the rooms should work quite well. If what I'm seeing (green undertones in countertop) and the somewhat reddish undertones of the cabinets, a pale green undertone gray will work nicely. Go get samples, paint them on a large foam board piece and move it around the room at different times of the day/different lighting conditions to see how you like them. Eventually the 'right' paint color just sorta shows itself to work the best :-) One last thought.....dark laminate floors can be gorgeous but I must say having one (inherited from previous owner) is somewhat difficult to keep up. It shows all the dust :-( Then again we have 3 dogs so....... haha! Hope you find your perfect wall color. Can't wait to see pics.

Thanks so much Connie - such helpful tips. I'm stuck on what to do with the granite as it does have that green tinge. I was thinking of painting the kitchen cabinets as well as the fireplace tiles all white to create a neutral palette. Good point about the dark hardwoods - so hard to keep up with dogs, kids etc. Hmmmmm…

And yes, the rooms open up to one another through a narrow hallway so a pale gray might just be the way to go, I really like Farrow & Ball's "Blackened" but worried it may be too cool.

I can't say for certain about the Blackened paint color because it's so hard to really tell on various monitors. But if you like that paint color, you can always have it mixed up in different percentages to lighten it if you think it'll be too dark. For example have your paint store do a 50/50 or 70/30. The undertones are what you need to work with :-) I'd keep the fireplace tiles myself because they are neutrals and can help you build a color scheme. About painting the cabinets.....I'm a BIG fan of that if you don't like their current color. If you choose a lighter gray wall color then you can go just a couple shades darker for the cabinets. You could even use an accent color on your island....maybe a green that works with the granite. When/if you tire of the island color, it's an easier fix to repaint that than the entire room.
