Would like to create opening in wall...looking for ideas

Would like to open up the wall in the middle and we don't think it is a support wall but it has several outlets (fireplace, phone etc.) so would prefer not to just knock it out (and have to fix ceiling etc.). Any ideas how to make this more open to the adjoining room?

My guess would be that from that wall to the left you do have a support wall, but the bump out portion from it to the right would not be (guess only; confirm with a professional.) I'd leave that wall in place and take down everything to its right. If you don't want to tackle the ceiling, then just remove the column portion and trim out the new opening. It will look better with two openings than with the three you now have, and you'll get your open feel.
