Mine was painted when we bought our home 19 years ago and I've painted it twice since. No problems either time.

This is good to know. I thought that what I have is grass cloth and there are some threads that seem to ravel. I would rather not take down all of the wallpaper. Maybe mine is linen. Don't know how to deal with the raveled threads. Any tips?

Black is very dramatic and also very bold. I've seen many spaces that use black on the walls. Painting grasscloth is okay and won't damage it. I agree, it has a great texture. Missing a textured wall with a solid paint choice under the chair rail always adds a little flare to any space! However, black usually works with the surrounding materials best when it is accompanied with all cool color tones. I'm worried that this scheme might conflict with the cherry from the bookcases. Maybe you should go for a black and grey scheme or a black and cherry look, but adding the third color might cause a little friction depending on the layout of the room. Just a thought.

The reveled threads can be glued back down with a thin mixture of white gkue and water and carefully glue them down , you might need tweezers to help.

Thanks for the glue suggestion. I am sure that the wallpaper wasn't sized and this will make things much easier.

I also have grass cloth wallpaper that has yellowed over time and I'm thinking about painting a light gray to go with white wainscoting in family room. Would love to know if you painted yours and if yours and how it turned out, was it fairly easy to do?

I have painted my grass cloth wallpaper three times. It is now red but just be prepared to use a lot of paint. I love the texture!

Put a water base primer like Kilz2 as the first coat so this will seal the wallpaper. Paint over Kilz with your latex paint.

Any suggestion on matte vs satin paint when painting over grasscloth?

Does anyone have pictures of their painted grasscloth that they would be willing to share? We moved into a home with a wheat colored grasscloth in one room but we would really prefer it to be gray.

In my ex-husband's medical office, our designer ordered red grass cloth because it was cheap with the intent of painting it, which we did. It looked great for over 15 years. My sister copied the idea in her home but I think she used a flat paint which, to me, looked chalky. I don't know what was used in the office but it never looked chalky to me.
