I would start with replacing the curtains and replace the hood with something more modern. You could go with a more modern wood hood or something stainless steel to refresh the room.

Update window coverings and light fixture over DR table. Floors look lovely. I like the hood fan, I think it would fit in with an eclectic space, kind of french country, but minimalist, not french country with chickens etc. just dark wood, off white walls, rustic trestle table, linen window coverings. I can't seem to find an inspiration pic for you right now.

Can you post more pictures from different angles of both spaces? It looks lovely but if she's not happy with I would start with removing all valances and looking for a larger rug...it looks like the chairs are off the current one. Is there a fireplace in the dining space? Agree with changing light fixture, removing trash can. Remove that little braided rug too. What is the backsplash? If we could see some more pix, I'm sure ideas will be flying!

Feast your eyes on the country wonderland! She's already made some improvements to this side of the room (eg, the heart wallpaper is gone). There is a big cool brick fireplace in the dining area.

You could also update just the kitchen island, and have it include more closed storage.

I think replacing the hardware with something metal (maybe oil rubbed bronze) would look nice. Also, I think the island could be stained or painted darker so it would pop more perhaps.

I noticed the side of the FP from your first picture, that's what inspired me to think " simple french country" I think a larger darker island would be great also. I think the existing hoop back chairs would look great in black also.
