my fireplace wall

I like modern. I have a fireplace in the living room, which I do not like. We do not use it. I don't think I can afford to remodel it to a very modern look, so I'm considering just covering it over with wallboard and painting the wall. The furniture and room focus on that wall. What could I do with the wall to make it a modern focal point and keep my nice conversational arrangement?
