We've always had them in northern Minnesota. (coldest place in the U.S. this past winter & most winters.) I don't think the cold is an issue! :)

My kitties chase the ones that get inside at night! Both cute & makes me crazy at the same time. Especially at 3 AM!

Hey guys, don't put them in jars, it's like a glass cage...I'm no hippie, but still...anyway, someone mentioned that it is a suburb phenomenon, but I am from Baltimore city and we get "lightening bugs" every single summer. Sometimes they even light up your wall when they follow you indoors ◕‿◕ I try to coax them outside and not kill them. But if you do, fun fact: the light still shines, just doesn't blink...woh woh...

I think we have them; they are tiny white lights in the gravel or bare soil; is this the European type; Lampyris noctiluca (common glow-worm)?

I could not decide if the fireworks or the fireflies were winning in the beauty contest on July 4th. There do seem to be more this year.

I wonder if the harsh winter most of the Eastern U.S.A. & Canada received last year has anything to do with the "Boom" in Fireflies this summer ?

@Trilliums Landscaping & Horticulture: we have the same amount as always in my part of Maryland. Baltimore suffered an extreme winter (days not snow fall amount), but not as much as the suburbs or non-urban cities (much more days and snow fall amounts).

In 2013 Clemson University created an app for counting fireflies. From any point, you look forward and click for every "light" you see for one minutes. It's fun. We have so many here - in Clemson, SC and it's fun to see them rise each night from our yard as well the surrounding neighbors.

I live on the North Fork of Long Island, NY - it wouldn't be summer without fireflies!

we live on East Coast Canada and we can find a "firefly light show" in our back field. It is breathtaking/ beautiful.

I voted "other" because we used to have them here, in New Orleans, when I was a kid in the 70's. I am hoping that one day the fireflies will come back.

I used to see a bunch of them when I was 10 in Isle of Ré (France) but I came back 30 years later and they had disappeared. Maybe because it was autumn... don't know if fireflies are seasonnal.

I grew up in SC...they're everywhere! Now in NYC I never see them, although a week ago I spotted a few in Brooklyn. :) Reminds me of home.

Not many in Texas and none in Colorado. I grew up in the Midwest and do miss seeing them. My kids enjoy catching them when we go back to Michigan.

We have them in Oklahoma. We moved here when our daughter was two, and the following summer I heard her whispering in her room well after bedtime. I went in to give her the business and tell her to get to sleep, and she was up on her knees, peering out her window and whispering to whatever was out there. When she noticed me, she said, "mama! Come and look. Tinkerbell has come to visit me".
It was totally magical, and I let her stay up as late as she wanted that night, whispering away.

We have them, although not as many as usual. That polar vortex was rough on everything! We also do not use pesticides in our yard unless a Japanese beetle wave hits. They have been scarce this year, too.

Forgot to say I'm in Chicago area.

In Pa. Absolutely! And I can’t imagine not having them. My husband and I just took a ride out into the fields to sit and watch them. Thousands of them and it was magical!

Not here ... too dry for them to survive.

But we have mockingbirds that sing all night.

Gina -- I remember visiting Gettysburg, PA in the late 80s with my son and late husband. We sat at one of the major monuments which overlooked an empty field. It was twilight. We watched the lightening bugs begin to appear, first a few then many. In my imagination, we were watching the campfires of the all Civil War soldiers who lost their lives there. It was very stirring and I have never thought of lightening bugs in quite the same way since.

grew up in Iowa where there were tons of them in the summer. Now live in Denver and there are sadly no fire flies to be seen. miss the summer twinkles at night.

We have a few in Muskoka Ontario. Love when they peek in the windows at night. The most I have ever seen was in Amish Country in Pennsylvania over a farmer's field across from our hotel. It was a breathtaking sight.

We used to have many in the wooded area of our yard but haven't seen them in years. Was just thinking I about it the other night. We live in central MA. The praying mantis used to be in our garden regularly & haven't seen any of them in years too. Wondering what could cause their disappearance?

Pesticides probably.

When I lived in Northern NJ my yard was a Firefly superhighway! Now, I live in SW Florida and there's not a one to be had. :-(

I grew up in the black hills of South Dakota and we had them! Loved them at night such great memories!

Live on Long Island NY and we see fireflies every summer and the most amazing fact is that we always see the first one on June 20 - my son's birthday. Every year we sat outside and waited for it to get dark and watched closely and waited some more and then there it was the first one of the summer saying "Happy Birthday"!!!

I don't have fireflies where I live. But I wish I do. It seems beautiful having fireflies outside.

No fireflies here on the West Coast.

I have never seen one and we don't have them in our country, New Zealand. No snakes or poisonous spiders too.

We have a lot of fireflies in Linz Austria- you just have to look for them. They only come out one night of the year!

They are abundant a little later in early to mid-summer and they are a dream! We love to lay in our bed at night and stair out our bay window and watch them. We crack the window and the babbling of the brook adds the perfect background music.

Dayton, Ohio and we get a ton of them! I used to catch them when I was younger, along with the other kids in our neighborhood.

They're absent here in Florida, and a delight when we camp in NC in the summer months. Brings back great memories of childhood in the midwest.
