I see why you want to do shutters! maybe combine them with side curtains? I'm a curtain lover, as you can see!!

Thanks, I love that table too. That is not our dining room. Just found that photo on houzz and thought it looked a little similar to ours. I'm thinking of doing the shutters with the drapes although you don't usually see that too often.

I like the photo you've posted! I think that curtains give a room a more elegant feeling, more luxurious, but I do like what I see!

You can definitely do plantation shutters - just kind of seems a shame to have to put something that heavy-looking on those windows. In looking closer at your pics - are the muntins set into an arch in the window? Really unique-looking. I understand about the sun coming in for a couple of hours - but you don't have a lot of fabrics that can fade in the room. I think I would just do beautiful panels. Also, I like that mirror, but you do seem to have a lot of dark tones in the room with the furniture and chandelier, and I would be kind of careful about adding more dark tones. JMHO

There are a lot of photos of shutters with drapes, like this one: They look really good and solve the problem with the sunlight. I'd suggest you go for it! :-)

Hi, we have the same RH chairs in the dining area. You could do curtains over the shutters.. I think it would really frame the space. We opted for a layered window treatment using sheers and drapes.

tgbd1 - yes there is an archway within the square window which gives a lot of character and that was one thing I was worried about the shutters w/ those windows being too busy from the outside view. My concern about the sun is it beats down on the floors and table and want to protect the furniture. It's also a privacy issue that I would like something to be able to close at night. Are you familiar with Silouhette's from Hunter Douglas. I will attach a pic below.

I was also a little concerned that mirror may be a bit heavy for this room but couldn't find anything else that I thought would fit it. I was hoping being that it's a different tone / finish of wood it wouldn't be too "matchy" but still blend being it mimics the shape of the chairs and similar lines of the chandelier. I want it to blend in more than stand out as I don't want to take away from the light fixture. Any other suggestions are welcome. But any others I've come across were too much of a focal point and looked too busy with the chandelier.

Here is our living room (also in the front of the home) so whatever I do in this room I would like to keep it similar to the LR as well so it looks balanced from the exterior.

Restoration Hardware furniture, Tanner coffee table and rug from Pottery Barn - I think I am in love with your house!! : ) Do I also spy the multipane mirror from Pottery Barn over the bar area?? And how did you come up with a bar in the living room - just curious - its very interesting! Love the rug in the living room - could you maybe have gone just a bit bigger with it - so that the front legs of couches are on it? Looks so nice. Have you done all of this w/o a designer? If so, you have done a great job. I am familiar with the Silhouettes - and I do think they are beautiful. I just don't know that I can advise on blinds because I couldn't cover up those arches. I am working with an interior designer now, so that I know I am making the best possible choices for my main living areas. I would suggest to you (IMO) that maybe now, for the finishing touches which are so important, that maybe you should work with an interior designer. You have such beautiful taste and have bought great stuff, I think an interior designer could send these rooms over the moon. Again, I don't mean to offend, JMO. You've come too far and spent too much money to not have an educated opinion about window coverings and such. : )

Haha, thanks tgb1! Yes, that is the Egan multipane mirror behind the PB Rustic Mahogany Bar and the rug "Hastings" is from PB as well. When we purchased the home the previous owners had a pool table and bar in here. We loved the idea and thought it would get much more use than a typical living room but the room just isn't large enough to handle it. We liked the idea of the bar and thought it would make the room more inviting so we found one we liked and ran with it. I originally liked the Rustic Pine one from PB but we chose the leather chesterfield couches (husbands choice) and the designer from PB felt strongly that the Mahogany was a better fit. I was VERY hesitant as I don't typically go for such dark furniture but some how I feel it all came together. The hastings rug was another item that I loved and was able to use in this space. The designer from PB helped us quite a bit for this room. She really was on the same page as we were. I generally like more lighter neutral colors but I have a dog and a 3.5 yr old boy so I felt the leather was a saver choice as I wanted to still be able to "live" in the room. The Egan Mirror was originally for the Dining Room but it went perfect behind the bar so we switched rooms. Love that mirror! As for the designer trust me I've thought of it more times than you know. I guess I was skeptical to spend the $ and afraid I wouldn't be happy with the outcome and didn't really know who to call. I did have someone come out for window treatments that sells Hunter Douglas and also does custom drapery and it was their recommendation for the silouhettes'. The can be raised so during the day so I can still have the detail of the windows but when they are down but blinds are open they should filter the light to protect the furniture but still allow some light in. I kinda feel they may be a bit much for me though. Not as heavy as the shutters, but not sure it's a look I love.

Wow - you have certainly made some awesome changes. Did you refinish your hardwoods or install new? Love the finish you have now. I understand what you mean about kids and dogs. I have a 14 year old son and a dog (and husband), and I just bought a tweedy mocha sectional for the family room from Crate and Barrel. Must have finishes that stand up to family use. I know what you mean about the expense of an interior designer, and I certainly don't have an unlimited budget, but I feel that she helps me to make the best choices for my rooms, both style-wise and size-wise. For me the added expense is worth it, as I don't want to make costly mistakes that I have to live with for a long time. One day I went into one of my friends houses, that I had not previously seen, and I was just blown away by her style. Her house is much more contemporary than mine, but the feeling I got in her house was just so calming, and I knew that her designer would help me to get that feeling in my house. And little by little, as budget allows, that is exactly what she is doing.

So before moving in we replaced just about all the floors (there was a different floor in every room). Big project but best decision we made and will hopefully never have to do it again! As for the Int. Des. maybe something I should look into. Do you mind me asking how do they charge you? Curious to know how that works out? Thanks!

I know they all work differently - but mine charges $110 an hour. I do have a contract - but I'm embarrassed to say I really haven't even read most of it - I knew I wanted to work with her. She gets her designer discount at retail stores that she passes on to me. Just for example - we met at crate and barrel (where she had already suggested for the sectional), and we chose fabrics and tables and a mirror. Then I ordered with her discount. Hope this helps, I'm sure the toughest part is finding a designer.

I'm sure that can add up, but that doesn't sound as crazy as I was expecting and pretty cool that you get to share her discount. I could have really used someone from the start. I wasn't expecting it to be so difficult to shop for some furniture but doing a whole house at once i.e.. picking paint colors, floors, window treatments, furniture, light fixtures, accessories… ughh…. it's tough. Lots of things I liked while we were looking but so hard to pull the trigger on any one thing and make it all flow. : ) Best of luck with your remodel! Send some pic's when your all done! Jenbak so far so good but we have not had the pleasure of using it while entertaining yet. Were still working on a few rooms of the house, so hopefully soon. I've heard that some people have sealed theirs, (we have not) but I would love to see photo's / reviews of someone who has. Largest we could have put in that room… You can sit 6 comfortably… possibly 8 but may be a little tight.

The RH sales associates assured me that three of the same chairs you have pictured will fit nicely
on an 84" table, but looking at your pictures it does not seem that three would fit without touching...can you confirm your table is 84", not 72"? Thanks, just want to make sure I am getting the right size since there is not a store near me.

Jenbak, I just measured it is the 84' in table. Because of where the legs are located the three chairs must go inside the legs… personally I think it's too tight but it can be done. I just moved some of my chairs around so you can get a better idea. Hope this helps!

You can push it in about 7 in'…. There is a board across the bottom connecting the two legs on the table so you can not push the chair all the way in.

Yes, i knew that is was limiting thanks for the dimension, Can't decide between the 84 and 96" table.

The 84" in table is a nice size (I couldn't do any bigger in our room) but because of the trestle and legs it's a little tight to fit 8 comfortably. Tape it out on your floor… trust me I know how hard it is to envision stuff until it's in. The good thing w/ RH is you have 30 days to return so if you order the wrong size you can always exchange it. Good Luck… Post pics when your done ; )

For those of you that have this table in the 84" size, can you PLEASE post pictures of it with 8 seats (i.e. 3 per side). I love this table but am worried that the placement of the legs may prohibit 3 per side. There's one pic of this above but I would love to see more. Also, since the 3 chairs are so close together, do your diners spread out and straddle the legs when sitting three per side?

Also, what is the leg room like at the ends? I saw the 108" table in the store and if I sat at the ends my toes would have to go under the base (or on it). I assume there is even less room on the 84" table. Has this been an issue?

I have the 96" table. 3 chairs fit fine, I was thinking of buying the 84" RH assured me 3 chairs would fit on the 84", they may fit but to me that would be way to close for guests. I put glass on top so we don't have to worry about spills.

Thanks Jen. I think 96 will be too big for my room. The room is approx 12' x 13' so it would fit but will look a little oversized i think.

If you do anything to the finish of the table it voids RH warranty. I did not want to alter the finish if the table so I had a piece of glass made forcthe top of the table. The table is not sealed so it is susecpible to oil and food stains. The glass was only $150, plus delivery and install. It also has some uv protection and my DR faces southwest with floor to ceiling windows.

I love love love this table but I need one that extends. I can't find any other table out there that is close to this color/finish/style. Have you come across other tables that are somewhat similar to the RH Monastery table w/Grey Acacia finish?

I also considered the RH Grand Balluster extending table. It has turned legs that are at the ends of the table so you can seat more on a smaller table. And you can put in extending leaves.

In considering that as well. I haven't seen it in person but the swatch makes it seem to be a very grainy and porous wood finish. Not smooth like the monastery. Did you see it in person?

Yes, I have seen it in the showroom. It is oak not acacia wood so yes the two species have different textures and graining. I appreciate both that is why I considered it. I would have also bought that one in the brown finish bc the weathered oak has a more yellow/green tinge to it which I didn't like. Maybe you should consider a round table since your space is more square.

Harpua - we have not put a finish on it. It will void the warranty with RH. With that being said the sales associate told me she's had customers that have put some type of shalack (spelling??) on to protect it. We've had the table for 2.5 yrs and have only eaten at it for the holidays, both times I've had it covered with a linen cloth so I can not comment on how it holds up to regular use. I would love to know if anyone has put any type of finish on it and see pictures. I do love the table but would be nervous about using it and not having it covered. I personally don't care for the glass on it. I have it on my kitchen table and It drives me absolutely crazy the second some one sits at it it looks so messy. Shows everything. I'm cleaning it 3-5 times a day
