An easy way to get a color scheme started is to choose something you love - say a piece of artwork or patterend area rug and pull your color scheme from the colors in those pieces. It's all personal preference, but you could do a turquoise blue scheme which is really popular right now or some apple green and orange. Or just keep everything really neutral like it is now and add in texture through pillows, window treatments and rugs. You have a great base to work with. I'd say go have some fun with color! Head to Target and pick up a small area rug and some throw pillows in colors that you like and see what you think. Good luck.

You could do a faux stacked stone on the fireplace. I wonder if you could install it right over the tile? It would sure make life easier! I'm trying to figure out how to attach some pictures right from the Houzz site…hmmm

Hope you don't plan on burning anything but candles in that fireplace! It looks like the firebox has been compromised. Personally, I would spend some good money on enhancing the fireplace properly with a professional before I spent any money on anything else. It could "make" the room!

Yes, the fireplace isn't usable!! It is definitely a main focal point when you walk in there.

First, your room doesn't look too dark on the pictures. I'd think twice before painting, especially white walls. You may find the contrast with the dark furniture overwhelming.

Second, I think you could use a furniture rearrangement. Your TV in front of the window is a general no-no, and your sectional is not aligned with the fireplace, which is a natural focal point.

A simpler, more striking arrangement on the mantel, with art instead of a mirror, would go a long way toward making the fireplace less blah.

Two small things: remove the horizontal picture to the left of the window. There is no space for it there. Also, lose the torchiere. It instantly dates the room. You could replace it with an arc lamp which will have some presence in the space.

Here's a start. I cleared the mantel and firebox, added art and a plant, moved the TV to the side wall with a longer console, and added a rug keyed to the colors in the art. I would move the sectional back so it's even with the fireplace rather than in front of it.

yeah, grover does it again. Seems there's nothing wrong with fireplace, I even like how shallow it is. Maybe matchstick shades for window. Then look at wall paint.

I pulled the sofa back from the wall, moved and lowered the shelves, and added cb2's atomic lobster arc lamp for a contemporary touch.

We have tried to rearrange the couch and the problem is there are two entrances to the living room. The fireplace is very off centered and the couch is huge. I love the fact of removing everything from the mantle and putting art up there. As far as the tv goes, I've thought about putting it up on the wall right above where you have it and eliminating the whole tv stand that just accumulates stuff. That's awesome how you created that! Can you pull the sofa all the way back to the arched opening? And mounting the TV on that wall is a good idea. Get an articulating arm so you can adjust it for better viewing and then push it flat against the wall when you are finished. You do need something underneath it to ground it though, and that something should be wider than the TV (which is why I got rid of your current TV stand). You could put a couple of ottomans underneath; they wouldn't collect clutter and could be used for extra seating.

Simplify the whole fireplace: no tchotchkes, candles, just one stunning piece of art. Then no one will even notice the fireplace. They'll admire your good taste instead.

BTW, I love your purple pillows. I think they look great with the brown sofa and cocoa walls. You might look for art with purple and a shot of orange, then pick up the purple in a rug.

Here is Dover White. Please understand this is no substitute for bringing a sample into the actual room. It will probably not look this light in the space.

Your need balance and contrast. Too much dark warm, balance with a cooler lighter color. The color above is great because it also gives you great contrast. stay away from anything warm on the wall color. Then add the rest of your layers, light curtains, contrast rug, and a sofa table with lamps. That Aubergene-plum pillow would also be a great accent to weave through in a bigger way with the lighter walls.

It's a beautiful space. Find something that inspires you and pull the colors from that. Using light color for drapes and a couple of pillows makes it easy to add pops of color! Even add a fun lamp to bring in a different texture. Good luck!
