ncreature - While I understand your point regarding trained professionals critiques orginating from a different perspective than an individual without formal training, it still smacks of a wee bit of elitism to say things like "The name Eames may not mean much to a everyday person on the street". Those of us who may lack professional training but visit Houzz regularly almost certainly know who Eames is and can easily recognize the iconic chair. There are autodidacts amongs the posters here or at least those willing to learn. We might not be able to articulate as easily why a design is flawed but we can see it. And its narrow minded to assume that only the wealthy like modern design. Watch House Hunters a few times and you'll hear over and over again variations of " I like clean, modern, industrial, sleek, uncluttered". And if you look around your average Home Depot and Lowe's, you are going to find fixtures, cabinets and lightening that will meet that want - maybe not exactly cutting edge but certainly modern, sleek and with clean lines.

So my point is simply this - it is an oversimplification to assume that modern design appeals to a limited group of people with certain characteristics. Good modern design can appeal to many types of people without regard to socio-economic standing.

Being from Europe, I think that modern design appeals to a limited group here in the United States VS Europe. Traditional & Transitional styles dominate the american market but we have to admit than more and more people are looking for sleek look, clean lines, concealed appliances and less ornament :)
