Challenge of the day!

Teeny tiny dining room needs major help. navy son says they are keeping his "bachelor" dining set until Navy commitment is over and they settle in one place (approx 2 yrs). So......besides ditching original owner's red drapes and adding a mirror, what can we do? Thanks for any idea :)

Love the wood, think the set is charming. Get lots of fantastic sets of placemats, if you want hand painted ones, let us know and choose from designs in our pillow line.
Usually hate rugs under tables but in this case, the woods are so alike that there needs to be a break. We just used wonderful indoor outdoor rugs in our quite formal entry way and living room to great success. Look at Home Decorator's catalog or Ballard Design. These rugs are durable, our cats love them to scratch and cannot destroy them and they are completely washable with the garden hose! The patterns are quite sophisticated as well.
SO choose a rug large enough to accommodate the chairs when people are seated in them, put it down and pick an accent color from the rug and be brave and paint your walls and maybe ceiling too. We love to paint ceilings the same color as the walls, so cozy especially in the dining room.
    Talk soon.
    Peace,
    Karen & Joseph

PS the last photo is of a bench Joseph designed for our studio. Note the floor. We used painted heavy weight artist's canvas that we had hemmed to size and then we painted it with water based interior paint. Joseph put a light distressed finish on it and varnished it.
A great inexpensive option that is also washable and you can change the colors!
In this case, we sized it to the room exactly and believe it or not, it doesn't move at all, even with all the traffic in the studio.
Any artist in your area who specializes in floor cloths could help you out if you don't want to use us. :)

More views of the room would be helpful.

I think a black-and-white theme would work well with the pine, with an interesting pine-framed mirror; you could use any colour you want for the curtains. Looking at google images for black and white pottery made me want to start collecting it ... :-)

The piece I used as inspiration here is from:

Where can i find the great seat cushions?
Pier 1 Imports has a pretty large selection of dining cushions, including this great black and white one: http://www.pier1.com/Geometric-Dining-Cushion-Black-White/2663382,default,pd.html?cgid=cushions_dining

lol I just finished looking at that one. I like it. The hard part is trying to find a plain black table runner!

Hi Bichonlover. So glad you like it and that Pier1 has such pretty chair cushions for you to consider -- I'm afraid I drew the ones in the picture in so they exist only in my imagination. A decent seamstress could make them, though, from a black and white fabric. And as for the table runner, nothing is simpler to make -- find a great black fabric (textured linen?), cut to size, hem. Putting a bit of weight on each of the shorter sides -- a fringe, a row of black beads -- will help it hang well. http://www.thehomesewingplace.com/how-to-se-a-table-runner/

The furniture is walnut color and the walls will be SW Greige but I think it will still work. Plus a not-to-big simple pendant chandelier.

Yes, I think it will work. Big smile. (The nice thing about black and white is that men usually like it too ... so nice to please 'em at so little cost.)

You are right. my son LOVES black!! Pier 1 has pillows that I thought were the ones in the pic so that was fortunate! I'm looking at a couple of inexpensive pendant lights from Lamps Plus. Color will probably come from a piece of art on the side wall and sheers on the opposite wall over the window. I was thinking of a mirror with a black wood frame for the back wall.

All good, it seems to me. Yay! Going to bed, this side of the ocean (very early, but I do that, and read). So good night. Fingers crossed that you'll find everything you want. Please, please post a picture when you're done. And in the meanwhile keep talking whenever. I'd love to see the light you choose .. and the art.
