Lamp size relative to depth of console table?

Would like to use 2 narrow console tables (less than 12 inches), one behind each of 2 sofas that face each other, but am worried that this will severely limit the size of lamp I can use on each table. Any rule for lamp/lampshade size relative to the depth of a table?

There is such a wide variety of table lamps available you can get them in all sorts of diameters and shapes, not a problem at all to have a narrow console.
