The art is too tall for the space. There must be another wall it will work on. It looks like a nice size for a short wall.

ok - if your alter area is going to be the fireplace - then you have a few things to consider - 1st, live with the piece feeling squished on top of the mantle - you could perhaps lean it at a greater angle, to give the illusion of more space - but that could end up looking silly.

2nd - I can't see in the image what is written at the bottom of the piece - but depending on what the art is made of - if it's an original or if it's a print, you could have the size altered, to be more suitable to your preferred placement.

3rd - address the mantle - can it be removed, or replaced with something less thick? Maybe a mantle that is attached to the front of the fireplace instead of on top of the stone?

Two things have come to mind, first if you use the fireplace it could effect the painting. Second remove the tall light from the right side of the fireplace. It also gives the fireplace more height. Liked the idea of changing mantle height.
