You could even install a small wetroom depending on the size!

My flat is tiered on three levels meaning it's just stairs beneath the stairs! If I owned the place I'd knock down the walls and get rid of the current rigid block staircase and add a curved (maybe spiral??) staircase that would wrap up the house, as well as open it up!

The tiny space under our stairs in our basement is the only 'room' in the house that didn't have any design input from me and, as you can see, it's a total disaster.

I told the plumber I'm disappointed the tanks aren't colour coordinated - he promised to pay more attention next time. And I told hubby he shouldn't have paid the painter, as I'm not happy with the finish in there... :))

Seriously now, as the whole house is underfloor heated and on four floors, we needed somewhere to house the tanks, pumps, etc; luckily the space has a door that rarely gets opened, so at least it's out of sight.

Ciao Gianna! That is a brilliant idea! Not the easiest because of all those heat related problems you've mentioned, but you seem to have thought it through thoroughly. :))

When I initially complained about the state of the room, my husband's suggestion was to find a graffiti artist and ask him/her to make the whole space look like a back alley. Sort of rough industrial feel. Or like those water towers in South USA. We even discussed issues of ventilation during 'the graffiti-ing' (apparently most of Hammerite can sprays are heat resistant). I thought that would be great and left him in charge of finding someone... the result: as seen above. Hubby emailed a couple of guys, but that's the last I heard of it. Maybe I should commence nagging tonight :))

Your idea has potential too. Now I'm thinking I should really do something about the 'engine room'. Yours or his solution...? I'll let you all know when we reach a decision (could be next decade though, knowing us...)

Oh dear, my understairs is used as a walk in shoe store. Not just for myself(I wish), but the whole family, five of us in all. This also includes winter boots etc. I guess I could decorate it with some glam wallpaper, one day!

My understairs cupboard was full of junk plus had the gas and electricity meters in. I had a look at property sales websites looking for ways I could add a downstairs loo. Found a house where they had added a loo in the understairs cupboard and created a small hallway to divide it from the living and eating areas. I then used Houzz to get some inspiration on how to decorate such a small space. Very pleased with the outcome.
So here are some photos of before and after with the floor plan of my house (without the work done) and the floor plan that gave me the idea.

After the work was done - new window added plus meters and fuse box moved before installation.

a wild ferocious beast lives under our stairs !

An up flush toilet has been living under my basement steps for about five years, in pieces and still in the boxes. Two years ago DH demolished the whole basement bathroom since the old toilet didn't work and it was a haven for spiders. Clearly, I am a patient woman.

Right now we use it as a big storage closet. One day I hope to convert to a temperature controlled wine storage room :-)

Nothing at the moment – cupboard has just been removed – but my dog will fit nicely.

I wasn't expecting a dog den under the stairs, but that's definitely a good way of using the space!

We're using it as our "wine cellar". Unlike the rest of the ground floor it's bare concrete and the coldest part of the house. In fact, the understates space is set to expand when we finally get around to do works :-)

At the moment nothing, we've just recently pulled out our old staircase with cupboard under that had everything you need but don't want on show. Planning to put back an oak cupboard only half width of stairs for the vacuum floor steamer and ironing board

Our builder used the space under our staircase to build a wine cellar with a nice curved window in it. Opposite the staircase is a great bar that we named "The Staircase Lounge". I really enjoy decorating this space at Christmas time.

@kenny Duncan: right now (and that's changing all the time) I have roughly the same amount of wine crammed in our space as I count in Sorrel's picture; but our under-stairs space is not half the size, only 7ft at its highest and L-shaped because the staircase is a winder. Without X-Ray vision no good picture, you see only the most-densely packed part of it. Not for sale :-)

Currently just a Christmas tree as our stairs were only fitted a week ago. Eventually thinking of a small armchair & probably trunk for shoes.

I have a small troll living under my stairs....I'm hoping it might become the next big thing in under stairs accessories.
