Great ideas! Thank you everyone! We have considered a built in and molding to lower the line. The curtain ideas are great too. I have really struggled with using light white curtains or adding color there. Love everything about the Low Country Residence picture. I have been trying to move away from the browns, but love that picture.

My worry is that you will see the built in when you walk in the house. The door on the wall on the left is a office, to the right the walkway is to the master. Right next to the office door is the front door to the house. So as soon as someone walks in they will see the built in. Not sure that is good or bad. Undecided on that.

Is it ok to have the molding on one wall? The level of the windows and shape of the stairs do not allow us to put modling at a high enough level all the way around.

Can't you find a level around the 'outside' walls of the room, so excluding the stairs, that allows you to carry through a trim line? Even if it's broken up by the windows...?

If not, here's a an example of a built in, not too deep, light colour, that would be an option, wouldn't be too 'in your face' when you see it from the front door. Yours would be narrower of course :-)

I am thinking something similar to that but it will be off center for the TV. Open shelving on the right to work around the air return, then cabinets the rest of the length (about 17 ft), with a opening for the TV next to the open shelves on the far right, then open shelving above the cabinets the rest of the way. 17 ft of built-ins seems like a ton. Worried about committing to something that massive. Plus it will need to be pretty tall.

I wouldn't do moldings and I wouldn't do built-ins. I wouldn't do curtains either. Keep things simple; the the architecture speak for itself.

Well, I guess a large armoire that can be closed is what you have now. Good on you! Maybe just center it on the wall and flank it with art.
