Bought me furniture and I hate it, can't return it. Help!

I bought a new sofa and side chair. They were delivered today and I don't like them for the space. I spent a ton of money and can't get a dime back from the store. What can I do? Looking at this set is making me sick. I've literally stayed in my bedroom all day so I don't have to face my awful decision.

I've seen worse! That probably doesn't help you much but put it in perspective.

I bet when you get a rug, some window treatments, it will start looking pretty good!

    Good luck!

The anticipation of new furniture is so fun and what a let down if you are not happy......and thinking about all the money spent. What is it you do not like? What were you hoping for? May we see more of the room these pieces are in? I think we are going to be able to help you and get you feeling better again!!!!

***Bought "new" furniture. Sorry, didn't mean to type "me."
What don't you like now that it's in your home. Is it the color, size, design, comfort?
Hi---I think it's pretty and looks fun... A few suggestions for you. Turn the toss pillows so the color is horizontal and it ranges from light to dark. Paint the walls a green hue---even if green is not top of your list, green will do a lot... I suggest SW 6424 Tansy Green and Churlish Green No. 251. Light panels for windows, light neutral rug... Good Luck!

I agree with Darzy, get rid of the matching pillows and pick one of the colors from the side chairs to pull the color. A chiffon pillow like this could be great https://img1.etsystatic.com/033/0/5374612/il_340x270.584969297_1qiq.jpg The sofa is actually pretty fabulous and the chairs have a unique print that could bring some warm touches to the room. Could you take some pictures from a wider angle? Worst case scenario you get them reupholstered but I don't think you'll need to do that. I would go with a different lamp in the room though, the silver is a cooler tone. I'd go gold or a dark wood based on the other furniture near by.

Your sofa is neutral--a smart purchase--you can take it any direction. Color, pattern, and texture can be brought in with throw pillows, window treatments, and a rug. I see a flokati throw draped over the chair! Keep adding layers and I bet you end up with a room you love.

I like your sofa, its lines and size for the room. Your room is unfinished. Come out of hiding and be challenged by the advice above to take it to the next step. This will be fun. C'mon now.

I love your sofa. It's classic and appears to be well made-- you can do anything with it. As others have said, get rid of the throw pillows. I know they match the chair but they need to go.
I think your chair is great; it's the fabric that I think is throwing things off a bit. I'm reluctant to suggest this on the first day you have had the furniture, but I truly think that if you could just bite the bullet and have the chair recovered you will be so much happier. Choose a fabric you absolutely love and use that fabric and a couple others on the throw pillows and drapes, etc. You will end up loving this room! I am so sorry you have been so upset with your furniture. We have all been there!! It just takes some re-thinking (and yes, it may cost a little) but it can be remedied with just a couple of changes!

The sofa is very big for the space. We wanted a longer, deeper sofa but it's very high off the ground, even without the legs. Even though we measured and had a home decorator come in to make sure, it's still so big. It's also not very comfortable, very stiff. And, I'm just not a fan of the pillow and chair pattern. In the sample we saw the stripes in the pattern were vertical. The horizontal stripe reminds me of candy. I wanted a chair in brighter colors but this is not what I envisioned at all :-(.

The sofa is neutral so you can easily change it's look. It is currently the focus of the room and makes you think it stands out like a sore thumb. Replace the pillows with some of different shapes, sizes, and patterns (no matching pillows) in colors found in the chair. Add a rug of one of the colors (the color you like best) in a simple design. Once you find a few pillows you like, (use an uneven number), you'll start feeling better. You could take the pillows from your sofa and place them on a couple of your dining room chairs and add a table arrangement or vase with some of the colors in the pillows. That will repeat your pattern/colors in an adjacent room without too much of one thing in one room. Once you feel better about your choice you can add lamps, window coverings, and some other complimentary colors, textures and patterns. It will be beautiful. By the way, don't remove the pillow/rug tags until you get the ones you love.

Did you have a much smaller sofa in place before? Maybe you are just not used to the larger, higher sofa? It does not appear too large at all in the pictures. It might be wise to live with it for a few days before you make any big decisions. The only thing I could add to it is that the scale of the chair may be off. It does look pretty small. Maybe it is partially the reason the sofa looks so large? Do you have a larger chair you could swap it out with just to get an idea as to scale? You may need a larger chair?

The furniture is attractive and the couch is neutral so many types of pillows could be added to tie the two pieces together. Here's are a few ideas. You could also possibly go with green.

By the way, if you can't stand it and can't return it, you could try selling it on eBay or Craigslist.

Oh my, I'd take a deep breath and see how you feel in a few days. The furniture looks great to me. The sofa isn't big at all. I agree with a previous comment that mentioned it might look odd just because you're used to looking at something a different size and/or color in the room. Please give it a few days. Also, I'm with abbyjean - please let us see pics of more of the room and we'll help make this room fantastic. Nothing at all wrong with that furniture!

My advice is to take a step back and breathe.. Then add new pillows and a throw on the sofa by pulling colors out from the chair. Add art, a rug, and flowers. Then add drapes or better yet blinds in a warm wood tone. Layer fur under the coffee table and add a few books and an eye catching bowl. Don't forget good lighting. By using the colors in the chair throughout the room it will pull the look together and look intentional. You will love it just give it time. As for the sofa being hard it will loosen up with use.

I'll just reiterate what others have said. Your furniture is great, just change the toss pillows. I bet you will feel differently once everything isn't so matchy.
P.S. I would also add drapes that extend past the windows which would visually bring the sofa into scale.
It's not the furniture. It's the wall color, the fact the the sofa is blocking the window, the window has no design element, the coffee table seems large, there's no rug (that I can see) , there are no side tables, the floor lamp is not a great color.

BUT - not to worry! These are easy things to work with. See above suggestions. The furniture is nice, just look beyond it to other parts of the room. You'll be fine!

the sofa is ok, but you need new pillows. I don't like the fabric on the pillows and chair.

I don't know what part of the world/time zone you are from, but if it's the U.S., did you sleep on it? I hope you are feeling better this morning regarding your purchases. There is a solution to this! And not to be a broken record, but I do want to stress that your sofa seems perfect. This is great news because it's the largest, most important piece in the room. You just need to do some tweaking and add some drapery. It's mostly the fabric on the chair and pillows. That is not a big problem!

I know....I have been hoping to hear back, too, and see what the plan is.

I'd start with paint---right now the only color and pattern in the space is the chair/pillows---so your eye gravitates to it. Try some color on the walls before getting more discouraged. :)

I like the furniture, add some other accessories and window coverings, perhaps you'll feel differently.

Read Houzz contributor Becky Dietrich's idea book entitled "Why It's Okay to Hate Your New Sofa." Your reaction is not uncommon. I also found the comments in that idea book very interesting too.

This idea is all over Houzz--using a neatly folder throw over or under chair cushions. It might be worth a try with your new chair with the additon of a lumbar pillow. It could change the look with no reupholstery!

Except the comfort of the sofa you can make it work. And you will get used to the new furniture. You just need to add pillows , rug and paint the walls.I I like your new furniture :)

the new furniture is great. what you lack in the room is color. Paint the walls a green beige...add window treatments and throw pillows. something in the green or orange of the side chair added to coffee table i.e. books, candles etc.

I'm new to Houzz and to this advice forum, hope this helps! I agree with most of the advice above. I would paint the walls a sage green. Green is a neutral color perfect for people who are typically color-shy. The sofa is the right scale for the space and you really can't go wrong with that neutral color. I would look for pillows in a pattern that really excites you. You'll feel much better about the sofa, seeing it with pillows you love! As someone else said, an area rug and window treatment will pull it all together! If custom window treatments aren't in the budget, I'd install ready-made drapery panels with the bamboo blinds sold at Lowe's.

The sofa is nice and neutral; maybe you'll come to like it. The chair seat is low for pairing with the sofa - maybe in a corner of the space with a little side table and floor lamp? And go a little easier on yourself! :)

I think what you need is another of the chairs.... having two of them next to each other would create balance and make you feel better about your choice.

I have the same experience with houzz! The sofa I bought has a funny color and is way off the color it claims online. The funnest part, the seller agrees a return but told me I have to take care of my shipping, which costs more than the sofa! This is hilarious man!!! I wonder why houzz encourages such behavior!

I agree with those who suggest painting your walls, especially behind the sofa. But you need to really take a deep breath and choose a rich deep color in either red or gray or a brown, whichever transforms your chair and sofa into a lush and lovely place to read or watch TV. Go to the paint store and select paint sample chips in every color in the chair and sofa and in every value of those colors, take them home and tape them to your sofa wall then step back and whichever one looks great to you is the one you buy. OR - like one commenter said, "bite the bullet" and sell your furniture for whatever you can get and then start over. But this time, you'll have a better idea of how to get the look you'll be happy with.
