Hi, Ildi. I would add a headboard with vertical columns. You can make a faux one with molding from the hardware store. Above it I'd place two vertically oriented pieces. The effect is a pyramid that visually heightens a room because it's "pointing" up - so that's where the eye goes. Below is a sketch.

Hi Lidi, Having problems downloading images to this site. You need a headboard, and then textural art above, either long and linear or three to five of the same. I'd add some colourful toss cushions and maybe new lamps. Not critical, but could elevate the room. headboard can also be a DIY project. Good Luck

I like your idea of using photographs on canvas; that way your room decor is personal and meaningful. Shutterfly can print your photos with a black border on the canvas so all of the sides look finished. A horizontal grouping of three would look great over your bed.

I ran across this picture from the 2008 IKEA House Tour. You might consider black and white photos and if you can see the drapes on either side of the bed hung at ceiling height you would frame the bed and give the illusion of height. Since your walls are dark you could reverse the colors with lighter curtains and darker bedding to match the walls.

I'd embrace your low ceiling rather than flight it. I'm on board with Marie's suggestion, just even a taller headboard with impact.

Very tall upholestered headboard! You could add two vertical mirrors or pictures behind your lamps.

I know your asking about pictures, but have you considered bringing the color of the wall up on the ceiling by a few inches and giving it the illusion the wall keeps going. It really does help add height.

I like Dytecture's solution best. The long horizontal artwork gives a very graceful, modern look to the room.

Agree with Dytecture and Feeny. You may also want lighter lamp shades to brighten the room or metallic for a funkier look.

I'd go with a tall upholstered headboard in a great patterned fabric. You can make one yourself and it isn't very hard or expensive. Get 1/2" or 1/4" plywood from your nearest home improvement store. Most of them will even cut it to your desired dimensions. Then cover it in foam (you can even use that mattress topper foam), then batting, then your fabric. You can even finish the edges with nailhead trim which looks great and adds sparkle. And voila! Art and functional headboard all at once! Good luck!

Custom headboard sounds good. Especially one that's green or red. The artwork has to be a muted color, you shouldn't go too bright so I gotta pick and choose nicely for ur bedroom design.
