What to do on these annoying columns?

I would love to add stone or a wood-like tile to my fireplace surrounds but cannot decide what would work on these long pillars. I could make it all one flat surface on the area above the mantel but than the TV would stick out of the wall. Leaving the columns make me uncomfortable about what the corners will look like. Ideas would be greatly appreciated. It is time for a makeover!

Thank you for the idea. So nice of you. I was thinking either a more traditional style (white wooden mantel) or more rustic/modern stone veneers and a floating mantel. The kind of stone is what is throwing me off, because of the corners on the pillars. Any suggestions for materials?

those are probably removable, might be a little work but they can go away.

Does the TV have to go above the fireplace? I think a stone revamp would be fantastic and really change the feel of this. You already have the hearth in place.

Cut them out and create a mantle only. I don't think they are structural. If they are then paint the entire wall one color.

Great tips and no, I have not done anything yet. If I ignore the top pillars and do a more traditional mantel, the shelf will have to wrap around the pillars, so we can finish the bottom completely separate from the top, right? Cutting the pillars off completely is not a practical option, as I would have to match wall texture and patch the ceiling.

Take that whole H down and that tile. get sone stone or do a modern fireplace with black slate and a fun mantle.

You can dress that whole wall up, put a little trim around the columns to make them stand out more, maybe do a little wall texture, a few paintings, here is something to give you an idea.
