I'm kind of in the same situation as you are. My house has a lot of stain & I am VERY tired of it. I would say - paint but, you prob. Still need it to flow which is a problem that I am having also. I'm not sure what to paint & what not to paint. I have a lot of suggestions on my discussion if you want to look it's listed as: Home sick in Louisiana. One suggestion that a lot suggest is to paint the crown molding and I'm pretty sure that's where I will start. I have someone coming to walk through my house Wed. Hoping that we can come up with a solution. I like simple, clean, & elegant. Congratulations on buying such a gorgeous home as it looks like you have a nice / strong construction to start with. I love natural wood, but this seems like too much. Paint the perimeter cabinets, crown, and base a neutral off white, then have the cabinets glazed. Leave the island and handrails natural wood. This will create a layering of tones.

I was thinking just paint the island a cream or white and leave the rest.

Also change the lighting

I have to admit that wood stain would drive me a little crazy. I totally understand the desire to paint it. I'd go with an off-white because you probably want to paint the matching cabinetry in the other rooms as well and off-white will be the most neutral. It's a big job, but I do think it will look much nicer.

I would have them painted by a pro...someone who also does stain finishes as they will make sure the paint will not chip!

I would definitely paint it....it's too dark in my opinion.

I would paint the island, hood over the cooktop and the pantry doors antiqued cream with black undertones and paint the entertainment center antiqued black with cream undertones.
