I agree with Urban Modern's comment above and recommend buying quality original art work. You'll be getting a one of a kind piece. Ideally, the artwork in your home should be meaningful and a reflection of you, not just a decoration on the wall to match a color scheme or fill an empty space.

Agree with both Urban Modern and Emilia. Hopefully you will find something that "speaks" to you and works well with your color scheme. You could also consider hiring an artist to do a commission piece for you.

When buying art, either directly from an artist or gallery, inquire about the materials used in making the work - you want art made with quality paint or other mediums, you want the stretchers made out of good wood, the canvas/linen should be stretched properly and prepared properly prior to mediums going onto it - the use/expense of quality materials gets factored into the price of the artwork. You want something that is professionally done and will hold up. A bargain piece of art, is not not always a bargain.

I would recommend buying only original work and straight from the artist.
Online galleries often take 30% from the artist.
Galleries usually take 50%.
Interior designer take a cut of 10%-50%
You can get a better deal when negotiating the price with a person who created it.
Don't be afraid to bargain.

Online galleries do take a big percentage of the total cost; however reproducing artwork on various mediums costs alot of money for artists no matter where you go; unless you are selling original pieces :-/

I have also sold some art through local galleries; the difference to my budget being only whether I pay someone upfront to get my artwork printed for display; or at the time it is actually purchased through my website. I will tell you the way FineArtAmerica.com ( who fufills my websites orders) works is there is a set base price for artwork of various sizes; depending on whether it is printed on metal, canvas, acrylic, or custom framed and matted. Each artist then decides their markup or profit for each size. It is for me the most feasible way to sell my work to the public.

Even if you do not find anything in my galleries that you are looking for; I encourage you to go to fineartamerica.com and do a search by keyword; such as "abstract". From my experience looking through the art they have to offer versus other online art galleries; the prices here are fair to both the artist as well as the company fufilling the orders.

Another site I can recommend is bumblejax.com. I have had multiple pieces printed by them for galleries in the past and they do amazing work. I could not have been happier. I believe they have a gallery of artwork to choose from as well as printing any images you submit to them. I've found their customer service is very helpful with any questions you may have.
