Love the front door picture you posted and the windows. If you are going modern they would both work on your home. Check Jeld wyn for windows/doors. Yes, remove faux Tudor stuff. I know you said no painting the brick but it may give you the most bang for your buck. Once Tudor trim is gone I suggest painting entire house same color add some modern landscaping and done!

When we bought the house I thought we would paint the brick but my husband talked me out of it---then I saw the photo with the red door with the red brick. Thanks for the input!!!

Board and batten sounds good though I would keep them the same color not contrast them. I think keeping brick is good and a warm green color may work around windows. Also perhaps expand brick work to include planters and paving accents. Windows could be double hung windows . Door landing could use cast iron railing on either side.

I would consider painting the brick. Here is an image of some painted green brick that I personally find very appealing. If you wanted it to look pretty modern, consider pairing it with black. Add some red leafed plants to the front of the house and you'd have a stunning stand out. Get rid of the Tudor look. Simple lap siding, shingles or board & bat will look great. The door is really nice.

I really like the green in the top right photo and the gray/black. I can't get my brain around my house looking as good as these since it has the 1/2 brick and lacks nice details. We had to cut off the iron railing in front to get our furniture in the house so it looks a little naked without it plus we had all the old landscaping removed which was no loss. Thank you!

I would also paint the garage door the same solid color as the brick. It will help to minimize it.

I suggest that you consider wood-frame windows instead of metal or vinyl-framed. Vinyl ages and cracks after about 10 years although they're really popular right now. HOwever, wood frame lasts 100 years.

I personally don't like red brick, so I'm prejudiced in favor of painting it, which gives a small house like the 60s ranch a uniformity. It is more upkeep and requires repainting every so many years (I imagine the time frame depends on the quality of paint and prep).

HI -- My house is almost exactly the same - only ours had ugly stucco which we spray painted with masonary paint. That made it look a lot better. So why not paint the brick ? - I know that would look a lot better. We put in Low E Argon ( w/crank openers ) windows and added a bay window with crank open sides. We replaced the garage door. I don't think board and batten siding would be right for your house because the vertical lines will shorten the look of the house. And why do what everyone else has. I like your idea for the front door . If you went with a charcoal roof and got black framed windows - then a modern garage door. Paint the brick your color choice - maybe a medium grey or tan . Then you could have a satin gloss black door for the modern look. I would paint out all the tudor lines or if they can be removed that would even be better.

What I like about brick--any brick-is it's low maintenance. Once you paint it-that benefit goes away. I'd advise you to work with lots of color options to enhance what you currently have.

AND! I think the door is perfect.

Why not try colors from your inspriration photo? I don't think you can do two shades of green, but a color like Benjamin Moore's Kennebunkport Green (HC-123) would look good. According to Brennan + Company Architects, they used Marvin Doors + Windows wood, metal clad, standard color! And that color is perfect for your house!

I think the board and batten will look just fine with the style of your house. Simple casement windows will finish the look of an updated mid-century home.

Here's my before and a few afters on our ranch house, although the after photos are a few years old and the landscaping has filled in now . I was going for a different look than restoring it to a proper ranch style because there were some really bad cobbled on addtions in the back and restoring to a proper ranch was not an option.

If you do a new roof, consider some type of covered entry way- perhaps not like my home, but a more open and airy arbor and tie it in to the roof at the same time. Take advantage of your ample front porch and make it welcoming. Consider adding a few inches to your roof overhangs if you do a new roof- it gives an illusion of a different pitch. Look at all the shingle options out there too a textured shingle in a contrasting color is always somethign to consider. We used casement energy efficient windows and the divided light grills are an option. The taller windows give an illusion of a taller house- the original ranch windows make houses look very "squatty", especialy with short contrasting shutters. We covered most of the existing brick with board and batten, but left a little bit of brick on one side. The other side had been painted so it was an easy decision to cover it. Our 'board and batten" is really cedar plywood and firring strips- we could not find what we needed locally and getting what we wanted was really expensive so we improvised and it works great. We like a wide white trim and had some shingles from another project so used some to add more texture.

Some simple yet colorful landscaping will add a lot to the house too. I don't know where you are but be sure to get something that will have color all year.

Live in the house for a while too, keep doing your homework. The "curb appeal" shows on HGTV have a ton of good ideas , and this website- wow- a great and wonderful source for things. I wish I had this when I started 11 years ago on this place.

I know how painful it is to drive up to a home you are not proud of- give it time and start with some simple inside or back yard projects to get the quick gratification you need when you are starting a project like this. Good things take time and remember it is not a TV show with a total transformation in 30 minutes.

I think some landscaping would help a lot! Instead of having small rectangular gardens, make the space bigger and half moons. How do you think the windows would look without shutters?

So much better but I am sorry to say I don't like the two tone garage door , I would do either all white or all grey. Probably all grey. but I agree the front door and the rest is great.
