Not at all, in fact it seems to be a trend that is on the rise. The question is, will it be "dated" five years from now? The question of datedness aside, tiled bathroom walls are quite practical. Mediterranean countries have done it for centuries to beautiful effect. It think the key is to choose materials of quality that have timeless presence.

Here are a few contemporary interpretations of the ancient treatment of the tiled bath:

Fully tiled bathroom do tend to come in and out of favor so I feel it would look dated in 5 years. They are not so easy to remove if you tire of it. If you are looking for the practicality of tile but want something less "trendy" you may want to consider a fully waterproof plaster such as the one in the attached photo. This can be used throughout including the shower and ceiling and is an old Mediterranean technique. It can be done in any number of colors and your fixtures can make it go contemporary or classic. It never needs paint and is something I use myself and recommend to clients since I want my designs to be timeless.
