need help updating a 1990 ranch home in CA wine country

We just bought this vacation home in california wine country and we are doing a full remodel. I would like to update the front and get rid of the tudor details and make it more of a modern ranch style. I would like to update the windows with either casement of double hung but I am not sure what color to go with. I am leaning towards expresso brown or cranberry. I would also like to paint the garage doors dark brown. I am thinking of changing the stucco to the smooth Santa Barbara style stucco in a light taupe. I would love to hear other ideas or comments regarding my ideas. Thanks.

Nice place. I think you are on the right path. Couple things -

I just painted over my brown garage doors. I ended up not liking them after a few years.

I also have the "bronze" aluminum window frames. I find with the light-colored siding the look is a bit "thin."

You have an awful lot of pavers in the driveway there.

I am tending towards the elegance and simplicity of a more monochrome palate these days.

Double casement windows would be a good option. I hope your chimney came through the recent earthquake okay.

Are you planning on removing the stone? Removing it all except for the entry way would be my preference. I don't think I would go with brown garage doors as you have an overabundance of brown and red/brown in the roof and pavers. Maybe taking a step further away from the taupe to green would help. You have so little color other than brown.

Thanks you for taking the time to respond. I agree that there is too much brown. What do you think about double casement windows with a reddish brown molding such as Anderson's red rock or Marvin cranberry? We are planning a double glass door for the entry. thanks again!

Some large potted plants and trees would look awesome. It would soften the area.

Are you making an ideabook with photos for the exterior? Choosing window trim might be easiest after choosing new stone for the facade, if you plan to go the stone route.

What are your choices for window colors? The brown would look pretty much the same way it does now, just nicer windows.

Thanks Susan, I agree, we actually placed some large green ceramic planters by the door and garage doors and planted in the long front planter which made a huge difference.

Yes, apple pie I am making an ideabook. I think we are going to keep the stone (at least around the entry anyway)

Dar, I like the cranberry, brick red or bronze for the window colors
