Dark floors! Accessorise and or rearrange my living room!

Please help, my leather sofa is burgundy, floor is dark charcoal grey, my piano is black and my kids homework corner needs to stay. Kids like their artwork display but they are not permanently mounted so suggest away alternatives so my room can come together. I like modern but homely look. I know current rugs are out of place but want to create 2 separate zones for this long room. Thanks

Why not create and art wall. Frame out a section and back it with cork board. You can display the art work tastefully and update as new art comes in without ruining the wall;)

As far as rugs, How about a set of seagrass rugs? They are cost and kid friendly. Also easy to decorate around;)

This is a very long room -- it will never work to try to spread your furniture across it -- will the person on the couch by the windows be able to chat with the person in the arm chair by the fireplace?

You need to break the room into two zones. There a number of ways to do this, depending on your preferences, by making functional groupings, ideally demarkated in part by area rugs:

1) move all the reddish leather furniture around the fireplace, put the TV set-up in the corner to the right of the fireplace, and set up the far end with something new -- a play zone, or a table for cards or crafts or whatever. this could also involve relocating the piano.

2) set up a "family room" around the current TV location with the two couches and arm chair, and then do something new near the fireplace, say a conversational couple of chairs with reading lamps for quiet evenings, or the same play table idea I had at the other end. you could even put the piano in the corner next to the fireplace, if you don't use the latter much.

3) some variant on #1 or 2 that moves the piano, now putting some reading space or conversational chairs out onto the porch-like area (putting the other furniture closer to the fireplace). or if this was where you put your game table, then it could even double as overflow seating for big holiday meals! :)

Just some ideas. Depends on your priorities and tastes, but multiple zones is what brings the area to life.

Thank you for your great suggestions. I have move things around and in the process of getting a bigger rug. I can't shift the position of TV as the aerial plug point is in the wall. We have thought about removing the TV wall altogether but have been told by a couple of builders that it's a weight bearing wall and not advisable to remove as it helps support the upstairs also. If I upgrade the sofas, please give advice of type and colours that will fit. Pure white lounge suites no practical as I don't trust my little ones. Would piano be ok below the current floating shelves? It's not a wood FP.
