our *NEW* playroom!

i'm so proud of this space. although i'm a teacher by trade, my passion and love are designing beautiful spaces for kids. now my 3 girls have their own space to explore + play. this was formerly a sunroom, and one of my favorite places in the house - so full of natural light, and nature to look at outdoors. we even had a family of deer to observe from within this space!

Awesome job! Love the space and the light! And you chose pieces that don't scream "kids" so the space can grow with them over the years (maybe a study or a library, later?).

Ok, now I need tips on how to get my kids to put away toys / supplies. ;) I love the blinds - so simple. Can I ask where you purchased them?

@tellytelly - the blinds are just simple hunter douglas roller blinds. and clean up = lots + lots of practice, incentives, FUN MUSIC to clean to...
@dublin8 - the chairs are zuomodern, but white has apparently been discontinued. EQ3 which is a canadian furniture manufacturer now makes them - and they are much more solid. not sure if they'd be available overseas?
@erikajo - not sure who the artist is on this one, this was a lucky find at winners (canadian store kind of like TJ maxx)

Just hand the kids a red crayon or paint and a big piece of paper and ask them to draw the biggest apple they can. Fill in with their hand or foot prints or words they can write or a story they tell. Voila! No $500 price tag and something you'll never get tired of.

I love it!!! What a fantastic room for your girls. It came together so beautifully. Re: the apple print. have you thought about creating your own version in whatever size you want? I go wild in my kids' rooms and have painted canvases inspired by their bedroom décor.

Beautiful and functional room! It reminds me of a picture I just viewed on FB of a room created for home education by my nephew's wife; c/w a bouncy floor and lots of work surfaces! (Three young boys...)

What an A+ job you did! You should definitely be proud! I like everything about it, even though I am not usually a fan of animal prints! Adding your girls' art on the wall next to the print might be a fun addition. Specifically, I thought of something I saw at IKEA that would look perfect with your style (see photo). What do you think?

Another way to bring in a pop of color would be to spraypaint the chairs (I am picturing aqua), but only when they get worn/dirty and will no longer respond to cleaning products!

I loved the extra photos you added. They really showcased all of the great things you did. It looks like you hired a designer! If I ever get to have kids, I want to display books as you did - easily accessible. You did an excellent job.

Alana, this is so wonderful! Most people would not have thought of putting this, Oh! so perfect!, rug in because it is lively and bold. Fear prevents so many of us from doing what we really would like to do and we end up just doing what is common. I commend you, highly!! Just absolutely perfect. You have the right to be very, very proud. You certainly do know what you are doing!! Sadie

great use of the natural lighting, the bright red color really makes it stand out! i really like how you used as much of the wall space as possible for storage/organization of toys and activities while still having room for the art piece. I agree that maybe the art piece should have been a bit more prominent, but that goes according to taste. Great job with the room!

@mouser23 - love this cost-effective method for displaying kids' artwork - a little industrial edge which i like. this would have been useful in my classroom when i was forever changing 25+ students' work on a weekly basis!
as for displaying my own kids' work, i have a bit of a vision that i think will work on either side of the purchased piece. (although, i'm not at all committed to keeping this one - i just think it works right now)... i have these GIANT picasso-esque bright portraits that i will be having my older girls do, and i will probably mount those in frames. i like having things displayed beautifully, and with careful attention - including their artwork, and this takes a bit of time. as a teacher, i always believed kids' art deserves special respect and recognition - just as pieces in a museum are carefully curated - so too should children's artworks be recognized and honoured. i will post another picture once their pieces are framed, and we can chat about placement of those pieces.
thank you all for your very positive and constructive feedback, it sure means a lot!
Your idea of commissioning your girls to do the "GIANT Picasso-esque" paintings is a winner! I'm anxious to see what colors you infuse in their work and the frames and the size of frames you choose! Definitely post your photos when you finish this next addition!!!

@ellie2003 - the table was a coffee table from EQ3 (36x36") that i switched legs on from an end table. it's now a better height for the kids, although the legs might need to be sawed down some. thank you all for your positive feedback (:

What a gorgeous and inspiring room. I'm curious if those storage pieces would accommodate file folder-size baskets for a home office area. I'm envisioning a portable filing system where individual baskets can be grabbed and thrown in the car if we have to bug out in the event of a wildfire.

Once again, that's a beautiful room. Thanks for sharing your success!

ok. i need your help with something. i purchased these two "renata" pendants (weplight argentina) for my kitchen island, but they just don't work. i want to use them in my playroom instead. how can i do this? dimensions are 11.7"H x 12.6"W , and i have two. (ash exterior, red interior). or i can switch to red exterior, ash interior. children's table is 40x40". i'm terrible with scale, so any help is appreciated!!

also - can this even be accomplished? (currently only recessed pot lights in room)
I'm definitely liking the idea, but thinking over the table, one would work better than two because of their size. Maybe if you have a reading area in the room, you could add the other in that area. Hope that helps. The lights are great and I love the room, of course I've said that before. lol :) Good luck! :)

@zazfuzzroc - thank you for your input. i think i agree. what about the idea of hanging one higher than the other above the table? then could 2 work?
Oh, that sounds really cute! I think that's a cool idea. I love in kitchens when I see the pendants at differing heights. I'm liking that idea. I think it would add to the fun look of the room. BTW how are the kids liking the room? :)

I think with your experience as a teacher and your obvious design talent you should seriously consider starting a business designing rooms for homeschoolers. You could also coach parents who are considering homeschooling as part of the service.
