old into new chest

I need help on revamping this chest. It's a great solid wood, very well made piece of furniture BUT it needs a fresh look. I would like to keep the black trim, but the wooden area I would like to paint a dark wood. My husband thought about painting the wooden areas a plum color. Any ideas are welcoke.

I think multi colour could be cool, maybe pick 3 or 4 colours and randomly paint the drawers... could go for colour or keep it pretty neutral your choice, would look interesting.

Here are some multi colour examples, could be as subtle or as vibrant as you like, could incorporate the plum or use different stains rather than paint... I think I would look cool.

is this a recent purchase or have you had it since ?. do you find a maker or other info on it? is it solid or veneer? I do not like furniture painted unless one is pretty sure it is not special. how about stain(s)?

the chest is about 15 years old. Using a color would be different. Staining it a dark wood is classic.

I think the beauty is the contrast so if you make the light wood dark it will not look very interesting at all.

What about using different color wipe on stains so the wood grain shows through but you emphasize the geometric variation?
