why would a tree that will grow so large be planted so close to the house?

I think it's a birch.

It is a River Birch and it will grow to about 25'. It has textured bark that peels off in sheet.

river birch trees aren't very large.

Actually my river birch grew very large! We planted it in a bed near the corner of the house and now, seven years later, I wish it was further away from the house. It grew twice as tall as our ranch home! Very pretty tree, but sheds it's small branches often, requiring lots of clean up. Still, I love the graceful beauty of it.

Betula nigra "Heritage" is what you'd want to ask for, specifically.

I am so sorry for the delay as I have been very sick. It is a Heritage River Birch. The only variety of birch approved for so close to a foundation. You can see more of it when I sold it on Zillow. 3781 Squirewood Drive, Clemmons NC
