If you're kids are really young and could lay out some gym matts for them to ride on and/or grass or a dirt path is a fairly safe (and affordable) option!

I'm really looking for a non-permanent solution if at all possible. That is easily removed.

What about d&g (decomposed granite).

I read that D&G will ruin your hardwood floors as pieces of it can get brought into the house.
