Current rug is 8x10.
But I really need 9ft length to properly frame the sofa.
So that'd mean placing a 6x9 rug and have that part of the room covered. Or I can place a 9x12 and have the room covered well.
It's an 11.5 x 16.5 room so there would be a nice wood border around it.
I don't know if having only the 6 x 9 under/in front of the sofa would off-balance the rest of my space.

I think a large rug would be good, especially if you decide to add chairs to your room. :)

9 x 12 should do it for you.

Try centering your art with the sofa rather than with the wall. That will make the art and the sofa more of a unified display.

First, just try lowering them so they're about 5 inches over the back of the sofa. Can we see a picture of that, please?

Turn your rug around and pull the yellow poufs in a bit. Just to see if that would be a better balance. Usually the rug runs with the sofa not perpendicular to it. Might save you from buying another rug.

Notice I said "First try lowering your pictures 5"....." Now try moving them in to the center of the sofa. Looks like about 12 or 15 inches would do it. Can you show a picture of that?

Yup, I just lowered. Now I'll move them in and see.

One other idea. Move the coffee table in toward the sofa about 18 to 20 inches from edge to edge and position it exactly in the center of the cushions. Now yellow poufs can go like you had them in the very first picture except make sure they're centered too.

Seems like you're wanting to have a little asymmetry but with pairs of things there needs to be balance. Love an asymmetrical look for certain groupings. You've got a little of it with your lamps on each side of the sofa. That's good.

I like the rug the way you have it now with the long edge running the length of the sofa. What does the rest of the room look like now that you have rotated rug?
Also if you decide to go with a new rug I think you could go with some type of pattern b/c the only real pattern you have to worry about is the chevron curtains. The poufs are plain the coffee table is plain and the sofa fabric reads as a plain b/c it is random & not a large motif. For some reason the stripe down the middle of the wall behind the sofa doesn't work. I realize it is the painted wall portion outside the white panels - I agree with the suggestion to move the 2 pieces of art closer. What might also help is to add some additional art in these 2 white panels in a more random grouping - my concern is that if you move the 2 pieces closer together then it will highlight that they r not centered in the panels

I think you need a larger rug. This one you have divides the space into 2 unrelated pieces

Originally I had a much larger, deeper sofa so the 8 x 10 rug centered nicely in the room and covered the space. (It's currently turned so the 10' is along the sofa)
When I purchased this more appropriate sized sofa, positioning the rug under the front legs disturbed the way the rug covered the floor, additionally the 8ft still wasn't wide enough to surround the sides of the sofa so I considered 9' x 12 or 9' x 6 ultimately I think 9' x 12 will be the best so that the room is covered properly since it's a small room and the other "zone" is really also for sitting.

Yes, a larger rug similar to the one that is there now. Room is looking better and better even though it was rather lovely to start.

Moving the pictures gave your room real perfection. For a second choice what do you think about a dark brown rug? I think that would work really nicely with your prints and be a lot more durable against staining and traffic marks. I have a very deep navy rug and im now convinced to go darker on carpets rather than light. Food for thought.

Hi jakedee, I'm going to disagree with the larger rug. It already goes from wall to wall and it seems to work perfectly now that you've turned it. The changes you've made look great.

If anything the rug could be a little shorter in width (the area beyond the poufs) so that the legs of the ladder shelf wouldn't be on it.

When people are saying larger rug maybe they're looking at the original picture before you turned it to run the length with the sofa.

I think the whole rug question is that you'd prefer to have the rug extend to the far end of the room instead of a big swath of wood floor which may make the space looked chopped up, am I right?

the consideration is regarding, (pics) the other side of the room, the carpet doesn't extend and it leaves the floor bare and if I'm going break up the room that way maybe 6 x 9 is better than
8 x 10?
And if it's generally agreed upon that this room could/should have one cohesive rug since the room is only about 12x15 my thought was to use a 9x12 to frame the sofa and cover the floor nicely...

The rug looks great now because it anchors the seating arrangement and runs in the right direction to do this. If you get a larger rug, it will be running in the other direction ( like your original).

If you could sketch the floorplan and mark the doors it would help others make suggestions. The TV diesnt seem to be in a great place.

If you generally are happy with the furniture arrangement, you could pull the sofa slightly forward, and move the rug forward and slightly to the left and so that the bookcase feet are all on hardwood. Might be nice to have a swivel chair to watch tv.

Get some painters' tape and place on your floor in the size of the rug(s) you are considering. This will give you a good feel for how the area will look with various rug dimensions. Best to take up your existing rug before applying the tape(s).

I think a larger rug would be good. i like that Capel Dokka with the yellow stripe in the center. Think it would look super with your drapes and poufs. Great Room btw.

Yes, lower those smaller pics but not in a straight line with the others. I'd try them hung even with the middle of the ones over the sofa.

I see the deal about the blank floor--this is one of those real dilemmas. Do you want to cover all of your beautiful wood floors with a rug? Seems there's not a good place to stop it without having it go almost all the way to the curtains. Can you fold the rug under just to the left of the shelf? Just to see how that looks.

Seems like part of the dilemma is that there's basically dead space around the TV and bookshelves. Without a rug it becomes more obvious. Where the rug now ends also looks a little awkward. Would it look more useful to have a small loveseat size sofa on the wall where the bookshelves are for TV viewing?

Is there enough room to switch walls with the sofa--move to wall where small pictures are now. Then move the TV to the wall opposite the sofa? I like the way the sofa part of your room looks now but the TV and bookshelves are causing a problem.

Yeah I've thought about moving the sofa to the "left" facing wall and and TV across it to the "right"
I've measured and it fits though the sofa would be exact. No side table(s), it'd fit snug against that wall.
Entering into the room would be along the right arm of the sofa and the current focal point of the sofa w the art above it would a little bit be lost. It would crate a zone of sorts and I could place a dining table etc.. Where my tv is now. This would be whole new room really. Not sure I'm ready for that change. But it's something I've considered as well.
Im also kinda happy w the book shelves now and the TV articulates out fully to the sofa.

Just one more thought...could the bookshelves swap places with the TV? Add a console under TV and mount on a swivel arm. Something like one of these?

I think you need a chair in front of the bookshelves facing the sofa. It would give purpose to that end of the room ( choosing a book, playing the guitar or whatever instrument is there). You can't really have a furniture arrangement with only a sofa.

I also at one point had considered putting a nice console under the TV along that wall but the TV fits in that little corner and because It articulates out for viewing from the sofa the angles wall upon which it's placed assists with that rotation.
I like walking into the room and seeing the bookshelves with the vase it's actually not so crowded straight on it just looks dark in some of the photos but in one that I just posted you see it's actually quite nice and appealing to look at when you walk into the room rather than walking in and seeing a TV
I actually had the TV mounted on that wall where the bookshelves are and was thinking to put a console underneath it but it didn't rotate properly out it's fine the way it is Im really seeking the best colored and sized area rug for the sofa and the walls.

And to clarify my earlier suggestion to move the sofa and rug forward a foot or so, this will allow the sofa to "float" in the room.
This will suit the style better than being pushed up against the wall.

This rug is nice, but I really liked your gray shag! Your hardwood floors are really pretty. Do you want to cover them or choose a smaller area rug in the space by the sofa? I must say, I love the combination of the warm golden wood floors with the gray sofa and shag! Sorry, I came in at the end of this discussion. Have you thought of doing 2 smaller complimentary rugs in your large space? Beautiful room and great style! Love gray and yellow :-)

The rug I had was nice but was a bit blue and really didn't go well with the sofa ... Maybe if it was pure grey, but it was blue and tan and grey etc..
the room is small so using 2 rugs would chop it up too much :-/

Been reading the older posts and agree with cluedin-try pulling the sofa away from the wall and float it. Seems like the dead space in front of bookshelves and tv is throwing you off.

I'm thinking you could either try a smaller area rug and place it just in the seating area to define that space-under the coffee table and front legs of sofa.

Of keep the larger area rug and maybe try adding an accent chair or 2 so it doesn't look like you have this large rug with nothing on it-as suggested by Zazfuzzroc in an earlier post.

I whole heartedly support your first inclination to lean toward a white shag. The room would benefit from some additional contrast. The white would lend itself to the other cheerful components of the room. For greater wear and tear, a white with subtle cream and neutral flecks could be up for consideration, as well.
