What Color Island & Floor

This is the backsplash tile & granite (Giallo Ornamental) I have chosen to go with my white cabinets. What color would work on the Island?
I also need suggestions for stain color for the wood floors.

You didn't ask for backsplash comments, but I think if you went for something a little less busy (doesn't feel like that now, but when a whole wall is done, it may be) and a bit more subtle so it doesn't take away from the granite. Perhaps less brown and a bit more grey, then you could paint the bottom of island a mid range grey, which would keep your room still feeling light. For the floors, I would suggest bringing home lots of samples and testing them out. You should also consider what is happening in other rooms that connect to the kitchen, as white cabinets really can go with anything.[houzz=

Well, you are quite vague with yr details but I'll post this pic for reference for island colour(pick a dark brown from yr https://www.houzz.com/photos/mill-valley-ca-transitional-kitchen-san-francisco-phvw-vp~206931 glass tile) and floor colour
also notice other details which might appeal to you such as the lights over the island

Maureen, I have been second guessing the tile, but at $4.50 sq ft. I really like the price. Giallo granite, because it's in the lowest price range. This is not my forever home.

I understand completely...but not only for you while you are living there, but for selling purposes..can you find a simple subway tile at that price? I haven't shopped for backspash in a long time, so have no idea. Good luck.

Anne dee, lots of other things in the works, some doors are being replaced with glass inserts, like your picture, lighted with LED tapes, new hardware, under cab lighting, undermount sink, etc.
I am really looking forward to painting the walls! They are currently red.
Will painting the island dark brown, make it look like I was going for real wood, and was too cheap to pay for it?

Hello! I do agree that you could go with a simpler tile, and subway tile can usually be purchased at a reasonable price, too. I would then go with a darker island color. For the floors, it depends on what is going on in the rest of the home. I would probably recommend a medium-tone for the stain so that it appeals to more people when it comes time to sell. I completely agree on the dark brown island. You could even go black, depending on your style. The darker color would add a nice contrast to the white cabinets and work well with the overall color palette. Although, as Maureen said, it is important to think about what is happening in the adjoining rooms and the style of the house as well.

The house style is traditional. 13 years old in a Kansas City suburb. The wood floors continue to entry & there is carpet in the family, dining & living room. Banister stained to match floors with metal spindles.

This is the family room. I have been here only 3 months, so lots of projects to do! Current color schemes are from previous owner.

Why not leave the floors for now (see picture), as they are nice. After painting and updating kitchen, you may be happy with them. With your kitchen opening to family room, I would definitely go with a less busy tile, so you are not stuck with trying to coordinate the rooms. If you painted the rooms the soft beige that's in your carpet, I think it would work well, but wait to paint the island (if you decide to) and the rooms until after you install your backsplash.[houzz=

Maureen, the floors will have to be refinished. I am moving the island to allow for more than one person behind it. The dishwasher & oven currently open to within 4" of the island. My hubby & I like to work in the kitchen together.
The floors won't be done til the rest of the room is complete, so I still have time on that decision.

re yr question regards painting the Island do what you like and not worry what someone else might think.
It doesn't matter and there;s nothing wrong with paint it's done alll the time.
It will turn out wonderful, i'm sure.

Good luck with all the work ahead of you. Good idea about the island. I would go with a medium brown, which will be the most neutral flooring.

I'd go with a simpler backspash too. Will the new island have white cabinets also? If so, a simple taupe/brown quartz would be a beautiful counter for the island. That would be great with your perimeter granite. Then, if you did a subway tile backsplash much like design inside's pic on the right (taupe), it would be beautiful.

Don't do a backsplash because the tile is cheap! It's too busy and will overpower the granite counters. These might be more suitable.

Here is an example of that type of backsplash with a solid counter. See how the backsplash "owns" the kitchen. With a granite like yours, it really could get busy.

That's a very reasonable price for the mosaic.. A simple ceramic subway in a gloss or matte finish can be had for even less.

Another idea is not to add a full backsplash and just go with stainless steel tiles behind the stove area. We've done that in our kitchen and we really like the look. There are all kinds of sizes and given the small space, it shouldn't be too expensive and they are easily installed (ours were peel and stick).

OK, as long as you want that look, you'll know what to expect. In my house, the plain choices are the ones that appeal to me after several years. I've tired of all my more adventurous choices. They were the choices I liked the best in the beginning and I'm now working to get rid of.

Just wondering, if you are set on that backsplash, would you consider a solid quartz for the perimeter and this granite for the island? I think that might work better.

I agree with leelee and Maureen and would go with a simpler tile. While the linear mosaic tiles are pretty in a small space (like behind a mini-bar), they are very busy. I used them in my outdoor kitchen, but I regret it now bc I feel like they are very trendy and will soon be outdated. At some point, I will want to change them-a very tedious and expensive process. I love some of the samples that Maureen and leelee posted. Good luck with your decision!

I am going with 3x6 subway tiles. The options are a tan ceramic, MSI Highland Place- antique white, or khaki colored glass. Any preferences Houzzer?

First choice of mine is antique white. Second choice is tan ceramic. I don't think the khaki glass works - it's just the wrong shade for the granite.

I usually love plain white or glass, but I really think the tan ceramic would look best with your granite.

Agree with Ann-the khaki doesn't work with the granite. I like the antique white best, although the tan may add a nice contrast to the cabinets.

Binksma, the mosaic tile was on clearance at Home Depot back in November 2014. I don't remember the brand or tile name. I chose a completely different tile.
