I would agree that the mirror is too much gold. If you are open to art and want it to work with the current colors, I would look for a large piece with cream and jewel tones (darker shades of green, purple, blue, red, etc.) That would tie together the current colors in the room if you don't want to change anything else, otherwise you could think about changing your color scheme with a new rug, chair, or window treatments and looking for art based on that.

The mirror will work. But I would try and bring more color into this room. Add a print panels on windows instead of what you have. Go a cranberry. On pillows mix up with prints and various size using cranberry mixed with cream. Bring floor lamp closer to chair. A square 24" coffee table in a bold cranberry fabric. Would bring life to room.

What about something seasonal? A wreath or snowscape or something? Less expensive and might let you try out for size/shape and hold the spot while you look for artwork you love?

I think a nice piece of artwork with a splash of color would be great. Pick something you love, and if it has some earthy tones like your room, great, but some bold colors in it would draw your eye to it (something like Cabinets and Designs suggestion). You might have a favorite photo that you could edit, blow up and frame to fit the space if you can't find artwork you like.

I would go with navy accessories, add a bit of the cranberry in the pillows perhaps, you don't need much of the cranberry colour, but you have to tie it in,bring a touch of the navy in accessories into your kitchen and dining room so it all flows, I think when you add another colour it will be easier to determine what goes above fireplace, but you need the pillows, throws etc, I would sew a couple of stripes of navy ribbon around the white lamps

I really like your room. If you added black, yes black as an accent color it would ground the room and add loads of drama to the space.
Consider painting your fireplace mantel and surround in a rich matte black. As it is, your fireplace, which should be your focal point, isn't standing out at all. The color is too close to your wall color.
Add black and gold cushions, a black throw, black lampshade on your floor lamp.
A darker area rug would also help in grounding the room.
A grouping of black and white prints in gold frames over the fireplace would look amazing.

The mirror is perfect because it echoes the window covering.Now what would look good to me would to have throws over both the chairs near the fireplace which are close to the chair color of the cranberry/red. Then if you'd like you could change the lampshades to the same color.You could also get throw pillows with the cranberry,color of the 2 chairs, gold color and cream color.With the added colors then the paleness of the rug should not be so pronounced.

The first thing that comes to mind is a simple, large, round mirror with a thin, brushed gold frame. Then I saw your starburst mirror- which I don't mind. But I'm thinking the simplified circle will be perfect! Good luck. I think less is more for this accent.

I think you are almost there. If you have to keep the cranberry chair for now, incorporate some little touches of it in the room so if makes sense to be there. Also something darker or black as suggested above.

If you want to work towards another colour scheme with the gold and ivory, I think a blue green like in this room would work well.

Why not a black and gold frame like in pic. I actually really like your mirror that you have picked, but too gold, if it was me I would paint it black and wipe off paint for the distressed look and you still have the gold but not too much of it, I do this sort of thing all the time with mirrors, light fittings. Even a big clock looks awesome

Thank you all for the suggestions. I was initially looking for a yes/no on the mirror, since I did feel I had too much gold going on. I've been working on this room quite a while and have been challenged with the furniture. Regarding the valances on the windows, they must stay. I cannot put panels on those two windows due to an uneven spacing, and one side of one window only has 8 inches to work with. It would have been too much fabric for the wall. I am trying to transition the traditional furniture to a more modern feel, hence the monochrome scheme. For now, it is what it is, even the cranberry chair (Ethan Allen piece but dated color). For the time being, I'll be decorating the mantel top with holiday greenery and a wreath which will buy me time to search for artwork. I will also continue searching for some throw pillows that incorporate the cranberry color. Thank you all for the great ideas.

I you really don't like the cranberry color on the chair you can have a slip cover made. Perhaps in a print or stripe in gold, navy and black colors. Then have pillows made with those accent colors. Blenheimnewzealand idea of painting the mirror you have black is a great idea. The mirror shape and size works well over you fireplace and adds interest to your room.
