Thank you for your question. The back of the range hood is a solid piece of metal which is load bearing. Anchors are driven through the wall of the hood into the wall to which it is mounted. To have the hood project out from the wall, some type of spacers could be used to create a gap between the hood and the wall. These spacers could be as simple as pieces of wood of the desired thickness.
