Living Room Before and After Photos

Again, as part of a whole house remodel, the living room needed to be updated. We bought our house and immediately embarked on a 13 month renovation. Here, we closed off the wall between the formal living room and family room, to create a personal office for my hubby. Changed paint, increased baseboard height, painted out the oak everywhere, new flooring and added our furniture and accessories.

Very nice update. We just bought a house and are going to have one big living room by taking a wall down between living room and family room :)

I don't see a tv in your living room...

Fish tank should go in another room. Large RED bowl and BLUE Vase are competing for attention. Have one focal point. If you love both pieces, switch them out from time to time to give your room a new fresh look.

@mariamull we like the tank where it is, we feel it balances out that corner nicely. Actually since these photos were taken I have swapped out the blue vases for a smaller basket on that side of the hearth.

@alchonka2000 that's right, no TV in the living room. When we have people over, we actually like to talk to them and not have the attention taken away by electronics in the room. We do however have a separate TV room on the second floor for that purpose. Hope everything goes well with your renovation.

Idea for you, everything in the room is good (even the tank). Maybe the part that causes confusion for my eyes is the oak cabinet the tank sits on. Maybe either paint it black (which would be the easiest to do but a little stark) or BETTER yet paint it a gray\taupe color like in your two chairs, add a couple mirrored panels to the front and you will have a modern sleek cabinet. If gray does not work then maybe paint it a cream, incorporate a crackle that is very very tiny so it looks like leather. This will bring in another layer and cool texture to the room without spending hundreds of dollars and will totally compliment your art. The entire refinish should cost less than $50 and it will look like you spent hundreds and hundreds.

@mariamull the cabinet stand is walnut, and for the sake of visual interest, we will not be painting the stand. It is boring to make everything the same. I visually like to mix it up a bit, and if you look again at the photo, you can see how the stand visually relates to the artwork over the fire place. Contemporary designers routinely mix wood stains and finishes in their designs.

I think you did a very nice job. The finished room looks modern and contemporary. I like it.
