Need help with an area rug

This is my couch, ottoman and chairs I am definitely keeping. Not sure which area rug to get. The zig zag one or trelis? I cannot decide which I like better. Or, maybe I'll just get a plain shag. Need suggestions please!

Thank you! I still have a lot to add to the room, such as tables, lamps, accent pieces etc...

I prefer the trellis because it's to scale with the ottoman, which otherwise actually overwhelms the sofa and chairs. It redresses the imbalance, I think. I also like that it makes colour sense with the chairs; the sofa can stand on its own in that respect. Big art on the wall (or walls) would also be wonderful to balance it all out.

I don't think either of them work too well - it might just be the way the light caught things in your photos, but to me the buttons on the ottoman "argue" with the patterns on both rugs. Are there any other options for you? Love that ottoman, by the way!

It might be the photography but color looks off on zig zag. I do like the zz rug though. Please paint chair rail to match walls.

I like both rugs but I think the zig zag might be best option for this room.

I was going to say either one since I like them both in the room, but then I read Rina's comment and I completely agree with everything she said.

I prefer the trellis. The oversized scale makes it a little different.

Thanks everyone! I'm also thinking a plain cream colored shag may work as well. Do the ottoman, sofa and chairs go well? Any feedback would help.

I love the furniture but completely agree the scale of the ottoman is a bit overwhelming to the other pieces. BUT, as Rina said, the trellis rug solves that discrepency beautifully. I think it's a much better choice than a cream shag would be.

I really like the trellis rug - it's elegant, interesting and seen less other than the z-z and a shag rug.

You have a great mustard yellow pillow in one of the photos. I'm dying to see that colour incorporated into the carpet. You've mixed the yellow/gray combo so well I think you can throw in the mustard on the carpet. One of the yellow pillows has a 'greek wave' pattern. If you can find a rug in any of the three colours (white, gray or mustard) with the greek wave pattern on it I think that might be your winner...any time you can duplicate pattern or colour you create a look that is pulled together.

I think the zig zag rug works best. It's hard because art, end tables, console tables, lighting and accessories still need to be added. You could go with something more colorful. Then you can pick up the rug colors in your art and accessories.

I like the zigzag rug in this case...not liking the color and patchy carpet effect in the trellis one.

I like the quatrefoil/trellis . . .the different angle of the quatrefoil/trellis rug pic might be why the zig zag is being seen differently. Do you have wall art and drapes for the room?

I like them both. The zigzag has a funky vibe, the trellis is more chic. I think I prefer the trellis. It does seems too big though, it goes to the wall entirely? Can you turn it around so the sofa's front legs are on it too and it leaves some space between walls and rug?
I love the oversized ottoman. Wouldn't go for a solid cream rug. The ottoman will kind of disappear and it's a bit boring. Nice, but wouldn't say 'wow'.

Between the 2 options, I would say that the zigzag works best. The zig zag is a cleaner, fresher look, which allows for more leeway with other decorative items. The trellis makes the space look heavier.

I was immediately drawn to the mustard or yellow in one of the throw pillows. If you want to have more fun, and be brave, you can always find an area rug that has those colors in it too!

Hope this helps...can't wait to see how you finish the space.

Hi---both are nice, but I prefer the trellis pattern. It has more contrast in color and value than the other and the pattern looks more serene; the zig-zag shapes might draw too much attention to just the rug and nothing else in the space. Hope this is helpful. Good Luck!

I love the zig zag. Not many rooms can handle it. I think the trellis is scaled too big, would be nicer if smaller scale. Would like the ottoman better if it was same tone as your other furniture. It kinda hits you in the face! Sorry.

The rug should be turned 90 degrees. An area rug should always follow the lines of the room (a rectangle in a rectangle). And should be no closer than 6-12" from the walls. I like the warmer tone in the trellis rug--the gray in the zig-zag rug is too cool in tone.
And yes, the ottoman is way too large for the space, it overwhelming everything else. Also, if it is rectangular, it should be placed with the longest side parallel to the sofa.
I think the rug is turned the right direction; it's just too large. Whatever rug you get, you need the next smaller size.

I am disturbed by the fact that you have three different neutrals, all very close in value but totally different hues. Make that four neutrals if you count the wall color. Warm gray sofa, cool gray chairs, white ottoman, greige walls; I don't think it works.

Maybe a rug with just a bit of color in it?
