You can buy slats that you thread through the links to give you privacy, but I don't think they're cheap.

Other than something like junipers or those slats, there's not much you can do about a chain link fence without spending a fair amount of money. We have a chain link fence across the back of our yard as we back up to a main road, and it's part of the HOA's fence so one family built a privacy fence inside it.

Look into creeping figs, and see if they will thrive in your area.

Creeping fig is a good suggestion. We had it covering a fence at our previous home...much nicer to look at than the fence. Does the fence belong to you or the neighbors...or both? Creeping fig can really take over, so you want to keep an eye on places you don't want it creeping.

Virginia Creeper should do the job in no time and give you fabulous fall colour as well.
