If your space is dark the likely culprit is not enough light as opposed to the wall color. See about getting some more light into the space. Grey verses beige is not likely to be the entire solution.

There are millions of shades of grey and some can be very light and airy while others are heavy and gloomy. I find that grey does indeed make white woodwork pop.

Maybe get some samples of grey paint and try a few out. Watch the color as light passes from early morning to late afternoon, and then into the evening.
