The kitchen overhead cab doors just too boring. I would use a jig-saw to cut out their centers and install semi-transparent glass or wire. This can be a diy project which of course saves oodles of money. Here's an inspirational pic

If you want to maintain the original feel of this home, you should keep and restore the woodwork. If you'd like to offset the darkness that all of the wood creates, choose light wall colors. I think Benjamin Moore's Alaskan Husky would be a lovely color for the living room, as it's a light with a hint of color that would complement the stone fireplace.

For the kitchen cabinets, Sherwin Williams First Star would be beautiful coupled with bronze bin pulls and knobs. It's also a light neutral that would work well with the flooring. If you want to maintain the original charm of the home, you could also keep the current glass hardware or replace it with a newer version.

Congratulations on your new house. Go slow, your plan to start with just wall paint in the living room is fine. Chances are good there's an excellent beige that can be pulled from the colors in the rug. SW "Accessible Beige" in the photo below shows a nice contrast with white trim and wood floors.

For the time being, adding more lights will help with the darkness of the panelled rooms. For the kitchen, I suggest a professional tile cleaner can clean and seal the tile. Then replace the hardware if you wish but keep the originals well packed in a box. Test for lead paint before starting to scrape or sand the painted cabinets.

The fireplace could be scrubbed if necessary, possibly by the same pro tile cleaner who can do the kitchen floors. Also, the darker area near the vent indicates the HVAC system may need some attention or maybe it's just the angle of the photo that makes it look darker there.

I'm sorry but this doesn't look Tudor other than some of the dark panelling. It looks like what the British would call psudo Tudor meaning a fake facade on the outside.

So I say modernize the inside and if you like the psudo look keep it outside. Gut the ugly dark wood and redo to modern standards on the inside to your own taste. Nobody really wants to live in the 16th century. Don't be held captive by somebody else's idea of style. This ain't it.
