What's wrong with what you have?

The wood flooring that in the pic is the new flooring. I just laid it down to see how it looks. We've got ugly tile on the floor right now.

Do you think that the counter tops and back splash would still go well with white cabinets?

Are you keeping the countertops and tile backslash?

Yes, we are planning to change only the floor. We may possibly go with stainless steel appliances later.

Hmm..... it appears the tiles are a cooler tone and the countertop is warm. Are the counters laminate?

Yes, the counters are laminate. I would prefer to redo the whole kitchen, but lack the funds at the present time.

I the hubby agreeable to painting the cabinets if you want to go that route?

I think you should definitely paint your cabinets white. The wood floor would look better. Right now i

I agree with previous posters that painting or refinishing your cabinets would go a long way in improving the harmony between them and the new floors. You could even sand down the cabinets to remove the "orange-y" finish.

Don't be afraid to live with something for a while before changing it, like the cabinets. I love the floor choice, and I think it is neutral enough to compliment further updates to your kitchen.

I would actually go with a lighter/ honey colored wood floor in there. It would lighten up the whole space & go so much better with the cabinets

The first pic is similar to the cabinets, but I like the floors a bit darker. Not keen on the one you have down, too much grey, but rest looking good

I would agree that painting the cabinets is a good plan, if you're not fond of them. (And I'm not fond of maple either!) Instead of a stark white, however, I would go with a French white, like a slightly creamy white. That looks richer than a stark white in my opinion, and would probably look nicer with your countertops and the floor. I don't see any problem with your floor color. I think it's nice. Good luck!

Okay, so my next question wood be how everyone feels about putting laminate floor in the kitchen. That's what we are looking at. I've heard some bad things about it.

The enemy of laminate is water. It will swell the edges in no time and ruin them if it gets below the surface. If you want to use it in the kitchen, you need to look for a brand that allows you to edge glue (rare) and an installer that will do that. (Also rare.) Otherwise look at doing a wood. It's far more forgiving with water splashes.

Agree with the above comment. We had laminate in the kitchen, it was buckling and a mess. We replaced it with a porcelain tile that looks like stone.

Maple cabinets, brownish counter, blue mosaic backsplash, proposed gray wood floor, terracotta accent wall: there is too much going on in this space. Why are you replacing the floor? The current tile is more neutral and less jarring to the eye.

We weren't fans of the tile when we moved into the house to begin with. We don't particularly care for the light tile and super dark grout. Besides the look of the tile, there are cracked and chipped tiles throughout the kitchen and dining room that you can't really see in the pictures. Like I said, I'm not an interior designer by any means. We are just looking for a way to make this space look good without tons of money and a big headache.

I think you'll get bigger bang for your buck by replacing the backsplash and upgrading the lighting.

I like the tile much better than the wood floor in your picture. It is too rustic to look good with your cabinets. I believe you can buy paint to cover the black grout. I'd spend the money on painting the cabinets, the grout, and replacing the countertop. Later you can replace the flooring, as funds are available.

I imagine the reason why laminate is so you don't have to bust out all that tile. If thats the reason then you are very limited to your selection of flooring types. Lamimate in the kitchen is just throwing your money and labor away. A laminate is a click floor system, perfect for the DYI, but there now is waterproof click flooring available. It comes in ditterent colors and also wood grain. Check out home depot or any flooring store. Its anywhere from 2.25 to 3.00 per square foot.

I think I like the tile better too. Consider regrouting the tile to a lighter color (not too light as it will stain over time). Try a grout color close to the midtone neutral in the tile. It will help the tile look less busy. You have a lot of different patterns already between the backsplash and countertop. A solid colored surface would be nice. I think painting the cabinets would look nice no matter which flooring choice you pick, but if you have to leave them as is, then tile for sure. I like the wood floor, but not in this kitchen. ...just one more opinion. ;)

One additional comment I like the backsplash, the flooring you picked
out, which by the way is available in 100 percent waterproof drop click flooring. After the floor in next least expensive and least labor imtensivemis changing the countertops to dark grey almost black.

Wow! I appreciate the modified pictures. I have the hardest time visualizing the finished product. Could anyone show me what the painted cabinets and new countertop would look like. Sorry to keep bothering everyone, but you guys have helped a lot!

Grover, can you give her a hand on this? mhendrix, I still have concerns on the counters with the backslash color. Any chance of changing one of these? If so, that will help determine the color of the cabinet paint. I like the tile floors better than the wood.

Here's a couple more pics of the back splash and the counter top. It's hard to see all the colors in the other pics. I doubt the backsplash and countertops are something that I can change right now. Wow...this can be a little overwhelming. For someone like myself who has no interior decorating ability, I don't even know where to start. Everyone's comments make sense yet vary a bit...lol

That flooring looks a lot like mine, but mine is peel and stick vinyl. Much less expensive and more durable than laminate. I think you need a different countertop, a black would pull everything together. I don't think you would need to paint your cabinets, that is a lot of time and money.

Have you looked at luxury vinyl plank flooring?

Floors should be lighter than cabinets unless cabinets are white.

Agree with groveraxle . Update lighting. Leave floor. Change backsplash. Counters later when you have money. Change or not change grout but fix broken tiles and keep it. Much better than the laminate options both in look and practicality in kitchen. And paint or don't paint cabinets but if you change backsplash then you can save on flooring and wait on painting cabinets in my opinion.

Okay for what it's worth here's my thought. Take the thing you hate most and fix that first.
The backsplash looks gray and black and if that is good for you I would do the cabinets in a light gray with either silver and black or just black handles. Then when possible do a black counter. Then when you are ready for your stainless steel appliances they will all blend. I would paint a darker gray accent wall with black and white pix in black frames.
As to the floor, I have pine in my kitchen I love it but it has to be maintained. On the other hand I have bamboo upstairs and I love it. It cleans with just a swipe of a sponge mop.
Laminate flooring looks nice but not quiet. I can hear the cat downstairs in the hall, can't wait to tear it up in the spring. Bamboo for some reason is not as loud.
So sorry hubby but your choice of flooring is too dark, have to side with wifie on that one.
Well, that's my two cents so whatever you decide when it is all finished remember to enjoy the space and cook together often!

My other worry is that the changes that we make to the kitchen will not "flow" with the living room. We have a very open floor plan. The kitchen is completely visible from the living room. The living room is very warm with warm colors.

After the further pics, what's really wrong with this kitchen is all of the colortone clashes. The backsplash doesn't go with the counter which doesn't go with the floor. It doesn't need another color that clashes too.

The bggest bang for the buck would be to change out the counter to a different laminate, then use a grout colorant on the floor. That can hold you for now, while you develop an overall design plan for the whole open concept that can include a change of flooring. Painting the cabinets could definitely help to bridge all of the different undertones, but that really big undertaking to DIY, and expensive to have done correctly by a pro.

Laminate has no place in a kitchen,but you could look at luxury vinyl tile. Eventually. You need to slow down and develop a plan first.
