Need help with furniture placement in LR

My living room is boring. On the "short" walls, there is an archway opening from the foyer into the LR on one end, and on the other end, French Doors to a patio. On the "long" end, we have a shallow bay window (to the left hand side of the arch looking into the LR from the hall) and directly opposite a fireplace (on the right hand side of the arch looking from the hall).

Currently, we have a beige sofa placed in the bay window area, a black/wood ebonized coffee table and small grey armchairs perpendicular to the sofa at either end of the coffee table. I am ready for a major makeover and have no idea how to set this room up.

Photos are not very good. Walls are pale yellow. I am working around a lot of inherited pieces but prefer a somewhat more modern style. I am at a complete loss. There is an archway leading into the Family Room to the immediate right of the fireplace. Was considering a window seat in the bay window and small sofas facing one another perpendicular to the fireplace. But am at a total loss of how to incorporate the antiques, etc. and I definitely want a new color scheme.

Are there only 2 walls posted here? Try adding a strong light from floor height (eg reading lamp or table lamp without shade) as you go, then stand in the middle of the room, and take a photo of each wall to post.

To give you a different perspective on the overall look, a quick comment would be to remove some pieces of furniture first (say 2 small chairs/high chair and large wooden piece), then add modern lamps and a larger picture to balance the fireplace to give a feeling of space and better see what you have.

I think you should decide on the antiques you like the most, are most useful and will work best with your new modern inspired decor. Either store or re-purpose the rest.

For a furniture lay out consider a transitional styled sofa placed perpendicular to the fireplace and the back facing the french doors. Opposite it, a modern-esque leather bench would be nice. In the bay window a couple of chairs with a a table in between facing the fireplace. Below is a floor plan.

A crisp light grey or creamy white with simple curtain panels would also help freshen the room. Hope this helps!

I like this bay window treatment and think something similar would be a nice contemporary look for your space.
