If your ultimate goal is to remove it, you'll need to have a Structural Engineer in to look at the existing conditions to see if it is feasible to do so. The removal of the post could mean a beam of some description and posts to transfer loads down to footings. Without actually getting in behind the drywall and down in the basement or crawlspace to see existing conditions there's no way to advise.

We can't remove these posts. We followed the design of the engineer to open the family room and this is the result. I would like to know what would look best in this space.ie. shelves, stained glass, while still keeping it somewhat open. Thank you again for your advice,

Okay, I wasn't sure if that was what you meant. You could install some curio shelves in the space. That way it still has that open feeling and allows light through. Think of the mid-century room divider shelving. Something along these lines inside the void between the columns:

Hello it's hard to tell by the photo, but it looks like if you put shelving there's not enough depth to display anything prominent. I think a beautiful iron insert made to fit the entire opening would give it a lot of interest...keeping it simple and beautiful at the same time! If you google faux iron inserts you can see different styles. Good luck!

Thank you. i had ran out of ideas, but I hadn't thought of an iron insert. i had thought of stained glass but didn't know how to combine the top with the bottom space. I will certainly check the sites for iron inserts. Thank you for your input. i really appreciate it.
