A long console for under the TV and then set the TV on it or hang it on the wall just above the console. Nothing else on that wall. Then get a lamp and end table for between the couches. Then get a small table with lamp to put near the chair. Than a big plant in the corner (floor lamp corner). With the pretty view out the window I would get sheer curtains for the windows. Later a pretty colorful rug for the center of the room...pillows to match.

try first moving the chair across from the love seat, but you might also try the love seat on the other side, and the chair under the window with an end table. also might allow the chair to be off the wall a bit, next is an area rug, a console table, i might wall mount the tv.... whats beyhond the arm chair to the other side? you also need art, table and floor lamps. kitchen looks fantastic! play off the stainless pewter look... to tie it all together.

Beautiful new place to call home. Seriously, I think if you find a console to use under the tv, it will be just what you are looking for for that wall.

Thank you all for your kind words and advice. I like the console idea. I am thinking of using drapes that pull all the way back so all the windows are open during the day, no blinds. I love thee natural light.

ok i would, now seeing the pictures, put the two couches across from each other, and have two chairs in front of the island. what im really wondering is if the chair goes with the rest of your house, and colors. if you like this set up, then i would move the couch to the right so it is centered to the fan and the TV. and add two chairs across from the window couch.

Wow I really like that idea. I will get my husband to help me try that move tomorrow. I had thought of doing that but I wasn't sure how the couch would look out in the open towards the foyer. I agree with you about the chair not really working. It is Kindof an Archie bunker situation. Hoping to talk my husband into a newer chair. Maybe 2 new chairs lol. What fabric and or color do you think would work. This chair is like a darker khaki brown lazy boy - since my couches are gray what would work best?

I like the entertainment center idea as well. Thank you. We built this house with simplicity in mind- no clutter no extras that aren't used. In our last home we tended to save everything- when we started this build I cleaned out nearly half of our stuff only keeping our "forever items" best thing I ever did. I am heading to shop this weekend keeping an eye for the perfect console or entertainment center to make this wall fill at home with the rest of the house. Lamps, rug, tables and curtains. After this room I will move on to the rest of the house. Hoping you will all continue to help me on this fun journey. Thanks so much. I will post a pic when I complete each room. There's no such thing as too much storage, right? Take that entire large wall and have a custom storage/shelving/entertainment center built in.....wall to wall and floor to ceiling. Not only will it be gorgeous, but will give you ample room for beloved "things", the TVs, books. Covered storage below and shelving on top. Look up some ideas on Houzz. IKEA makes components you can hook together, and surprisingly you may be able to find a carpenter to make one for you. (as an aside, we did a built-in buffet in our dining area...small condo...using stock kitchen cabinets/drawer units on legs we bought at Lowes and painted to match,...then splurged on a custom wood top finished to match our dining table.).

One room at a time is a good plan....we used to move a lot, and we always made an effort to finish the room we would use/ see the most first. It would become a sanctuary!

im not sure on the wall unit... but lets see a picture of the couches moved!! i love when a plan starts to come together lol. Look for a rug as well, and dont skimp on the size, tape out the floor area to see what you need.

I just moved to a new house as well, and had the same questions. My layout is pretty similiar to yours. big blank wall, big windows, a smaller wall across from the windows, etc. take a look at my dilemmas to see pics. Well, at first I was going for a console at the smaller wall and wall mount the TV. glare from the windows and need for storage and WOW factor made me change my mind. on the big wall, across from my kitchen, I am installing custom cabinetry and floating shelves, along with a central panel in reclaimed wood with a ethanol fireplace and TV. will look very nice and create value to the house.
you can source at IKEA pre-made cabinets as well, build the panel to make your dimensions work with the IKEA cabinetry.

If you can avoid it, don't put sofas in front of windows. Could you put that sofa on the opposite wall, so both sofas face windows and TV?

What kind of floors do you have? They are GORGEOUS!

Lovely house. It has great bones! Two things come to my mind.

(a) The sofa is blocking some beautiful doors. Switch it from in front of the french doors to the other wall - with a long row of art prints on the wall above it - and bring the armchair to the corner near the french doors. You might want to add some color in the room with contrasting pillows to break up the brown of the sofa. See pics below of how we added color in this home

(b) Also all of the furniture is basically the same height right now. So think about breaking up the monotony by introducing some pieces of furniture with vertical lines rather than a horizontal based TV console.

I would suggest, go for an Armoire style unit. See pics below. An Armoire houses the TV in the Living Room that we designed for a client (Armoire is not in the picture, though.

Incidentally, if you are interested in seeing a virtual rendering of how the TV wall might look like, or a virtual furniture layout, or a color palette, we do that online for our clients.

(c) Add mirrors for something shiny - always a hit when it reflects light in the evenings.

(d) Depending on the look you are going for (high-end or casual) you can have either Dupioni Silk panels on the French doors or pull-up Bamboo shades - the latter adds some texture, making the room infinitely more interesting.

(e) Lighting - Some modern looking anglepoise floor lamps in a muted blue or green would add some drama and contrast nicely with the traditional sofa - adding interest to the room, yet keeping it close to it's traditional roots.

The home is kind of a blank slate right now so the sky is the limit. Have fun!

Thank you. The flooring is Cimmaron by Anderson in Sorrel. It's 3/4 thick solid hickory. We loved it so much we used it in the whole house except for bathrooms. I am loving no carpet!

Here are some wall systems. Assuming there's enough wall space, move the sofa from in front of the windows to the opposite wall. Then move the chair by the window with a small table and reading lamp.

Hi. The house is gorgeous. My room is similar. I have my tv on top of an electric fireplace in the centre of the wall. In the left corner I have a curio cabinet. In the right corner is a lazy boy chair. Looking at the window wall, I have the lazy boy chair in the left corner, a table with lamp in the centre, and another chair at the end of the window, cornered into the room. Continuing in the circle, the sofa, like yours, has no wall behind it. On the one wall left there is an armchair & table centred on the wall and enough space between it & the end of the sofa to get through. Hope you can follow all this. I have pull drapes (lined) on rings which I can close if there's too much sun or cold or at night if I feel like it. I have a 6' x 9' rug with a large pattern in the middle of the room, which picks up the same colours & pattern as the drapes and throw pillows to match the drapes. The chairs & sofa are basically solid colour, so the pattern in the drapes, rug & cushions really livens it up. Oh yeah, you need to put a tray with candles or a low container with flowers on your hassock. :)

I agree that a wall to wall...or nearly...wall storage system would be not only stunning and make the room very inviting but practical to store toys, games, cookbooks, kitchen dishes you take out only on special occasions, photo equipment etc.. You could even buy it at the store where your kitchen cabinetry came from to match it. Just leave more open shelving for the books or art items. A wall unit would balance the visual weight of all the hard, angular kitchen cabinetry at the opposite end...as well as the 'hard and soft' of each area.

Love the plant idea to soften the angular hardness of the kitchen and the large masses of the family room furniture. Something light and airy and large like a tree would break that up and link to the out of doors where you have lots of trees.

Wallpapers are 'in' and I'm sure on Houzz, you can get plenty of ideas as I did. I am seeing in my mind's eye a beige/grey series of graphic links...not too big, not too small. Behind a large wall unit that isn't wall to wall, wallpaper would make the unit stand out.

Can you integrate a gas or electric fireplace into the wall unit? It makes an excellent focal point.

If money is no object, you might consider a sectional sofa that is less bulky. And if buying a wall unit is not in the budget at this point, Housegal 200's (above) idea of the cubes (IKEA) is good. You can even get little doors for some of the cubes to cut the cluttered look.

Definitely move window wall couch go opposite wall and chairs (new or current) to windows. Plant hanging or floor by windows as well. Mount tv to wall and install short and wide cabinet (or two side by side) underneath. Could be a floating cabinet, can find on wayfair. Large rug, like 10x8 and glass coffee table. I suggest an end table with storage and an oversized woven basket for blanket/pillow storage. If you need further media storage create the look of an entertainment (back to tv wall) unit by using floating pieces...more floating cabinets or open shelves up the side of the tv for example. Using glass and lighting in this area will open the space up as well. For your windows, nothing in the dining. Just a really upgraded center light fixture. In the living I would use skinny rods and take almost all the way to the ceiling with sheer curtains to expose the light. Curtains should go to the floor.

Beautiful home! One thing I would suggest is to recover from the move first. Making decisions too quickly, not giving yourself time to live in the space to understand it--can set yourself up for regrets later on. In your spare time, go to the library and comb through decorating mags for ideas. This helps to narrow down the look and feel you want.

Having owned over 20 homes (including condos/townhouses), I can say unpacking everything first, especially organizing kitchen, master bedroom and bath, are a priority. This brings you some sense of normalcy, creating less stress and less of that is what you need now!

After living in a space for a few months, you've found the quirks, pleasantries, and everything in between. Being mindful while sitting in a room helps you to see what's needed--make notes.

I've been in my current home 2 years and began making mental notes (then written notes) the day after I had unpacked everything. Only two boxes were repacked and put into the laundry room--those I'll be dealing with this year--the "final touches" are in those boxes. Since I have less space (both actual floor space, because I lost one bedroom, and wall space, because I have many banks of windows) I don't have as much room for art work and other things I'd normally have on the walls.

I think you do need something on that wall besides that TV---that wall is huge---but keep looking for the perfect item to put there---something dramatic that is different---a nice metal sculpture or an interesting old piece---my son had this huge space in his house and he found 2 long narrow pictures that complimented his taste--he is into videography and works for a sound company---he found these graphic like prints of an old movie camera and an old spotlight---they look amazing together and fill the side wall near the TV---he found these at Hobby Lobby. I would suggest going there or to Kirkland---they always have interesting pieces and different things all the time.

I agree with diyer59. We moved to our new home in October. Very similar to yours. I'm not planning on getting it furnished for a while because I want to make sure what I get is exactly what's in my head. Look for the perfect accessories, but don't rush to do it. Your home looks gorgeous!! Take your time.

Certainly the T.V. Wall would be perfectly suited for custom built cabinets that house the TV., books, art pieces, pottery etc. Understanding that presently your budget may not allow for the cost involved in a wall of custom cabinetry I would look to Ikea for a cost effective way of achieving the look. Get creative & think outside the box. Billy bookcases are $49. each,can be laid horizontally, rather than upright and even stacked one on top of the other. For a seamless integrated look I would paint the cabinets and wall a deep colour (like charcoal grey) so the T.V. recedes away and add pops of colour and interest with accessories. You could use a few basket in the shelves for texture & hiding the non pretty things. Pull the chair ahead so it is closer to the conversation circle of the couch and splurge for a rug that is big enough for all the seating to sit on, at least with it's front legs. Again IKEA has inexpensive jute rugs that would work fine and very low cost but still anchors the furniture & warms up the space. You absolutely need a coffee table that is big enough to provide a spot for anyone relaxing a spot to set down a drink, etc. this too could be very budget friendly by purchasing 2 the same & butting 1 against the next. I would save if drapes aren't necessary by leaving the windows bare & use the funds saved to buy a few fabulous pillows, a throw, and a big piece of artwork the repeats a bright accent colour of your choice. Your room will look decorated now! Shop flea markets etc. for interesting finds and a curated look!

I haven't any suggestions, but I just want to say, I love your home! The flooring is beautiful, and so is the kitchen, and you have a lovely view out the window. You have a wonderful home!

Other than the console and TV issues, I would get an area rug that you really love. Then I would add decorative drapery panels outside the glass of the window (I strive never to cover a veiw) if you need privacy plantation shutters or wood d blinds in white. But you really need to warm this room up with these very important items, they will also help cut down on the noise and echoes in the space.

Thank you all for continuing to give me amazing advice. I can't wait to post the end results and move on to the next room. Taking my time on one room has given me a sense of peace instead of feeling as though I have to rush through this. I am trying to do as one of you suggested and sit still for a bit and figure out what I want out of each space. After the living room I will move on to the open kitchen which I am happy to say is completely ikea! My husband and and I built the cabinets ourselves and hacked the material from ikea to design the hood and refrigerator cabinet. I am pretty proud, to say the least. Thank you all again for your kind words and I am looking forward to decorating and sharing with all of you.

Best advice I didn't take when I moved into my new house: Don't do *anything* for a few months. Live in the space, and slowly let it tell you how you need it to function. Watch how the light comes in during different points in the day, look at the lighting at night. See where the lack of storage annoys you. See how you want to angle your seating vis-a-vis the TV. Look at photos here and on Pinterest, but don't commit to anything until you've been in the space for a while longer, even if it looks unfinished/blank/weird.

I was told this, didn't listen, bought paint I didn't like and furniture that doesn't work, and just had my dining room repainted because I had styles and ideas I liked coming in and didn't anticipate how much the house would alter them (or how much my style would change over the year I've been here). Better not to rush into it than spend money you don't have on things you end up not liking!

moving into a new house can be overwhelming - I did it in feb and everyone thinks you should just run out and buy things - we didn't. We took our time and found unique and interesting furniture and décor that we loved. we are still not completely done, need some more décor, but I am not rushing - and I love how our home is coming along
