It's a beautiful room and I'm going to paint it in a minute, but a few observations first.

I would simplify the mantel. Whether you put art or a starburst mirror there, use only one or two other objects and make them larger so they are more in scale.

The TV wall looks a little lonely. Nothing accentuates empty space like a tiny picture in the middle of a great big wall. We can deal with that later, but it needs to be addressed.

If the room is really dark, then ceiling cans on a dimmer would be a great solution.

Finally, if you paint, take into consideration that you'll have to paint the entire space so be sure whatever color you choose looks great on the kitchen end as well.

Wow, thank you Grover! Blue and green look great- so much easier to imagine with the pictures- thank you so much! I hadn't thought of dinner cans- the ones above the mantel are dimmable, so would make a lot of sense!

I totally agree with the too small framed mirror and cluttered mantle! What do you think of a large mirror propped against the wall there? Would that be too "apartmenty"? Or maybe some floating book shelfs?

SW 6127 Ivoire would work nicely in all of this area.

Match the blue in your rug, and go two shades lighter for the paint color.

But all of the seating is so far apart! I'm sure some decorator will address this issue. It's a lovely room with nice-looking furniture, but not exactly set up for conversation.

Yes, I agree that the furniture prices are too far apart to be "cozy". I know you want to focus on the fireplace and the TV...so how to do? Can you try a sofa on each side of the fireplace and the easy chair off to one side facing the fire? Then move the TV to a stand to one side as well. You may find that now you have room for a second seating area, or perhaps a large wall unit with a couple of easy chairs facing...if that arrangement...the TV could go on/in the wall unit n

Very nice room and I like the colour you currently have on the walls. Have you thought of an end table to go beside the couch with a lamp? What about moving the lamp you currently have to where the chair is and that corner can be used as a reading area

I like your husband's idea of painting the room gray. Find a muted color that complements the rug without being blue. I think grey will help blend in the TV stand so it does t look so lonely. I would put the floor lamp behind the chair and the ottoman in front of the chair. Then add a coffee table.

It's hard to tell, but except for the chair in the corner, the seating doesn't look too far apart. If you feel like it is, Olivia, we can address that too, if you'd like.

I love the green/gray/blue paint idea- something that's a mix of those 3. I think it'll update the whole area- the house has too much gold/beige- which is dating! Any suggestions on specific colors? BM boothbay gray looks nice! I'm obsessed with the hgtv dream home- love the clean coastal feel- the SW watery they used may be too blue?

As far as the arrangement: I want to keep some open space for my baby to play on the rug, so in waiting to get a coffee table until she's a little older. I tried to keep the furniture on just the outer border of the rug- any tips on placement on a bordered rug?

Love the end table idea- would be nice to have something with legs to breakup all the bulky furniture! I want something with a different design- what about a round, black one with skinny legs? Any suggestions?

I was thinking of placing several plants in the area to the left of the tv. The opening to the room there is only a few feet wide so I don't want it to feel closed off. Should I go for a uniform look or mix it up with different heights and types of plants? Should I get stands?

No to the arc lamp behind the chair. It's out of proportion. If the chair needs a lamp, a plain floor lamp would work better there. Arc lamps really only work over sofas.

We also need to address the art placement in that corner. It looks totally random. I would suggest that all three framed prints on that wall might form a group between the TV and the chair, and plants could go to the left of the TV.

You are right the arc lamp does not fit with the chair.

I agree no arc light to modern for this space a floor lamp in corner would work better. Remove those small pic by chair. Think scale. Better to leave blank. Than to just hang something.

move the couch on the far long wall, the loveseat opposite it, so both are on either side of the fireplace and the chair at an angle looking towards the fireplace. Mount the Tv either over the fireplace or paint that cabinet black and use it at the end of the room where you walk in.

I love white carpets and find them bound at the carpet shop for about $50 each 9x12. Your rug has warmth to it though. Hang curtains on either side of the windows up high. They need to have the rod at least to the bottom of that soffet. This will make the walls look taller. I like to pair dark with lots of white items. Add in a white vase on table, or white mums. Get some green plants to warm it up. maybe a tree in front of the windows on the right. It is a pretty room and your furniture is worth keeping. Just add more blue, greenery and lots of white to it.

Missrenee, I would love to mount the tv, but hubby says "absolutely not!" With that being said, I just don't see how else to arrange the existing furniture...

Should I sell the arc lamp or put it back between sofas? That area needs something now!

I personally do not like arc lamps however if you like it then keep it.

I think the arc lamp works but you're right it was completely wrong behind the chair (never know until you try). Grover's pic of your TV wall is perfect! I would copy it exactly. Mixed feelings about BM boothbay gray. It looks really blue in some rooms:

I prefer the not so blue rooms. SW watery is definitely too blue. If you're deciding between the two colors, choose boothbay gray. Have you considered adding a coffee table and moving the ottoman in front of the chair?

Hey! Do you have crawl space to install some recessed lighting? The thing with ceiling fans now a days is that the government passed a mandate which does not allow ceiling fans to exceed a certain amount of light output. I believe its no more than 120-180 watts per fan. So lighting from a fan might not be the best solution. You can put a fan without a light and use recessed cans which will provide general and evenly distributed lighting through out your room.
