Mediterranean Revival: Paint and landscaping ideas

We just bought a 1940s Mediterranean Revival house in Florida that desperately needs a paint job, a new house number and light fixture, and landscaping. We like the current colors (we're guessing the body is Sherwin Williams Soft Apricot or Sweet Orange) but are open to other ideas. (It's in the historic district, so we need approval to change the paint scheme.) This style is new to us, as is Florida gardening -- and we're looking for wildlife-friendly native plants. Ideas?

The apricot is really very pretty on its own. However I would suggest painting your trim in a lovely greenish blue hue. Very Mediterranean. Also, your walk way could be far more dramatic flanking the walkway with several topiary iceberg rose trees and fill the bottom bed with blue / green hen & chick, blue chalk and blue / purple succulents. Beautiful!

Try looking through landscape designers in Florida. You should be able to find some inspiration pics and they are often open to questions if you want to call them. Use the find pros section.

I'm in Florida and have vast experience dealing with Mediterranean/Spanish/”Florida-eclectic” styles. I have attached a few images so you can see some typical landscaping ideas that work well in the Floridian climate. I always tell clients to try and use xeriscaping as much as possible…especially if you are in a municipality that has intense water-saving restrictions in place. Good luck!

Go with a tan color with brown trim...and build out an awning at the front door. Then bring in olive trees in front.

We just finished a Mediterranean theme garden in Dorado Beach, the home
owner always dreamed to live in an Italian village, therefore every time they
had a chance they vacation in a Mediterranean country.

This year, they visited Puerto Rico, and as part of their trip, but not
planned, they purchase a beach villa and turn it into a Mediterranean /
Caribbean village.

The house has Spanish roof tiles, so we worked with the terracotta as
our base. Our exterior walls were painted in salmon, mossy gold and beige color to high light architectural features, bronze light fixtures
(lamps) and the landscape used plenty of green, pink and blue vegetation.

What a gorgeous house. In Chicago, we don't see many houses this style, so it is so fun looking on houzz and seeing all the different styles there are in the country! I just have some general tips for the landscaping by looking at your house. Try to plant in masses, this will give your curb appeal more structure. Right now all the shrubs/trees are separate and it would appear stronger if they were in masses. I also want to throw out the idea of using mexican pebbles in some areas to eliminate some grass space or replace as mulch. Just an another idea for you to think about! Good luck, excited for you!

HI Leanne, I love your suggestion of the bluish-green trim. Do you have any specific paint colors? We are going with SW Warming Peach at 50 percent for the house color. And we're wondering if there's a more appropriate front door option than what's there now. Thank you!
