Covering gatepost 'boo-boo'

We just installed a new wooden gate to replace the old rusted chainlink. DH and his buddy managed to have a little miscommunication about how it was going to be put together, and now we have some cut marks (about 4" x 4")that need to be covered on the posts.

The hinges are black "wrought iron" and the handles will be too. Any suggestions about metal plates, or decorative stuff that could be attached to cover the marks?

Anyone have luck with crafting copper flashing? Is there something similar but black? Or maybe a wood carved detail we could just stain right along with the gate when the time comes?

Thanks for your ideas!
