storage bench for 'container'

Hi all! I'm new here and new to gardening but I'm ready to fix up my space! I need some help brainstorming an idea I have. I have a deck in the back that has 2 long storage benches attached. They are finished and sealed like the deck, and since I don't use them I thought it'd be a nice place to plant some flowers...Is that crazy? I haven't seen anyone else on the web that's done that so it's hard for me to picture the 'how'

I imagine I should add rocks or pebbles to the bottoms for added drainage, but should I put plastic in to protect the sides and bottom of the wood? I'm not sure if watering would ruin my deck--the rain doesn't of course :)

So I pictured it as plastic sheeting (of some sort) down, secured to sides and fill bottom with garden rocks since I have those all over my yard, then soil to the top and plant.

It gets full sun and I think if it turns out it will be gorgeous.

If you think this will work...any words of wisdom? Any colorful plant suggestions? I'd love something I could cut and bring inside.

Thanks for reading!!
