constructing containers - how deep?

Hi - I am planning out some planter boxes to build for my deck. (Different sizes, several feet long- a foot or two wide - and different heights. I was thinking of building a basic plywood box, lining it with 1" styrofoam insulation (is that enough?) then lining that with either heavy-weight garbage bags or pond liner material from the home store. Drilling a few drainage holes then covering the outside in something decorative.

My question... how deep for the soil? I am here in zone 5 and I am planning to fill these with assorted perennials and possibly small bush/dwarf tree and want them to be able to survive winter. For things like daylillies and ornamental grasses what would be the minimum depth? Would I be OK with 12 inches of potting mix and 4 inches of mulch? Could I have a dwarf tree with 24 inches?

I don't want to add more weight than I have to, but I want to make sure that the containers are deep enough to have permanent plantings.

Thanks!
