I suggest growing them in the fall ;o)
Summer Carrots taste to earthy here so planting them around the 3rd week in August makes for an excellent sweet carrot with long term in-ground storage rather than the fridge where they do get wimpy. I've been picking carrots since mid Nov and even after these current teens at nite the carrots are still good to go as long as I can chisle them outta the ground. A blanket of straw/leaves will keep the soil workable if needed. "Touchon" is my favorite sweet variety but any of the Nantes types do fine for me in the fall. You can always plant a smaller spring crop for fresh harvest if desired but it's hard to beat them in the fall.

Try the Oxheart carrot. the best of the best.

Thanks for the info about summer. I also heard that excessive watering causes "lazy" carrots that grow out like standard roots instead of one root straight down. If you water them tons then starve them so they grow down in summer, would they turn out badly? My hope is that I can plant succession crops of carrots to have constant harvests for my 4 year old who loves them. By the way, I'm planting Mokum from Territorial.

Thanks
